Northern Arena: Opinions
Negative experience: As a mid-range gym the facilities are clean and it offers a wide variety of classes and equipment. Where you can run into challenges is parking and room audio quality. Parking during peak swim lessons is frustratingly oversubscribed. It results in people parking on side walks and outside the lines. You can park in the Woolies lot when this happens - leave enough time for the added walk. The audio quality in the classes is mediocre. If you have any hearing difficulties or sensitivities you will likely have a barely acceptable experience. Having fed back and asked staff to experience it from the audience side didn’t get a lot of curiosity, mainly escalations and reasons why it can’t be addressed or it’s a hard problem. There was some movement but the results to date haven’t created an environment that is fit-for-purpose. It won’t be a trivial fix, but the lack of pride in making it a great experience means you will not get a high quality experience on the whole.

We understand that parking during peak swim lesson times can be a challenge (especially weekend mornings). We have recently had added pressure from local businesses using our spaces outside of our control. We are actively monitoring, and working towards a solution. That said, we encourage members to allow a little extra time during these busy periods.
Regarding the audio experience in classes, we completely understand how important clear sound is to enjoying a workout, especially in cycling classes like The Trip. We invested heavily in this area at the beginning of the year, while live and other virtual classes (such as RPM and Sprint) are generally well-balanced, the Trip audio is proving otherwise for us. We have consulted our audio provider and have explored options to fine-tune the system where possible. This serves as a timely reminder to continue progressing this to improve the overall experience across the board.

Fantastic experience: Enjoyed our first baby swimming session with Teegan. The changing rooms are very well equipped and include a private shower and a changing table - which is quite handy with a baby.

Negative experience: The parking is super tight and busy, not convenient if you are driving a van. They tried to charge me 35$ per person just for a shower!!
Hey Alice, sorry we could not accommodate you. We know that parking can feel tight at busy times. We do our best to accommodate all members.
Regarding the shower fee, we are a private facility that caters primarily to our paying members. This means our amenities, including showers, are part of their membership or casual entry fee. Casual users who aren’t members are welcome to use the facilities for a fee, which covers the upkeep, water, power, and cleaning of these areas.
We hope this clarifies our policies for you.
Positive experience: Fantastic staff, great facilities BUT unbearable to sit in the swimming area where the babies & young kids have their lessons! The acrid chlorine fumes burn our eyes and the stifling humidity is awful! Maybe the chemical treatment should be done after hours to allow the air-conditioning to clear the fumes. Also suggest dropping the heat to something closer to bearable. I understand that it is set high specifically for the babies, but honestly, l don't think it needs to be that hot

We treat our pools with extremely low levels of chlorine, and only add extra when treating an empty pool after an incident. All dosing is monitored carefully to ensure swimmer safety and air quality.
The air temperature in our learn-to-swim area is intentionally set a little warmer to keep babies and younger children comfortable and to prevent them from becoming chilled without compromise.

Fantastic experience: Love this gym . The instructors know what they are doing and are super keen to help if needed . The equipment range is slowly getting better too . It’s definitely an older persons gym , I would say majority are 40 plus . But all the members are respectful with the equipment, wipe everything down and put things away . There are lots of fantastic classes as well.

Negative experience: Terrible communication with application process. I applied for a cafe position with Northern Arena and the interview itself went very well. I was introduced to Nic, one of the swimming instructors about joining for the voluntary swim teaching training. I was given forms for this and told I would be contacted to arrange a date to come in. Well a week after I've emailed for an update and still have heard nothing, I call to speak to someone for an update. I'm told there were a lot of applicants so it's in the process of being reviewed. Moments later I'm emailed to say both cafe and swimming instructor roles are filled. Fair enough but my problem here is myself being given false hope and no communication on your end. I was under the assumption I would be proceeding with the swimming instructor position at the least becuase of the forms and the promised arranged date. Very poor management, I hope your organisation can improve on this. It's not fair to applicants.
Negative experience: Way to expensive, just received a 3rd pay increase email this year. No car parking. Inflexible on refunds when not providing lessons.

We can appreciate that at peak times our carparks can fill up quickly, we have tried to mitigate this as much as possible by staggering start and end times of classes and lessons.

Negative experience: We had my daughter go for swimming lessons through the school she attends and the coach was shouting at the kids. My daughter was crying and upset and wanted to get out the water. She kept saying “the lady is angry”. After asking the coach to please speak gently she rudely said to me I can speak to her manager. Awful attitude from the coach and that’s the reason my kids will not do any swimming lessons at this swim school and for the same reason we removed her from lessons at this place years ago.

Positive experience: Generally good swim lessons here. Parking is rough, it’s REALLY expensive, they’re totally inflexible with refunds even if you call to hold your membership for the term the day the payment goes through, and you can’t use make up classes unless your child is actively enrolled (despite that you’ve actually paid for the lessons already). There are also very few family hours, so you are in, out and on your way with few opportunities to enjoy swimming with your child in any lanes to reinforce the skills. I just don’t love being there and feel they lack in customer friendliness and service. We might have gone back over the years, but due to repeated inflexibility, wasted money and such, I will highly recommend Northern Arena to wealthy, type A parents whom live within 20 minutes of the pool. Everyone else, possibly save yourself the headache and settle for (probably just as good) swim lessons somewhere else?

We understand that parking can be a bit tricky at peak times, to help ease the flow, we’ve staggered our class start times to make things smoother. Regarding your feedback about payments, these are always taken in advance to secure your space for ongoing lessons and are reserved for you. We offer unlimited make-ups lessons for any missed classes, but it’s important that absences are marked in advance so that you can rebook and use your makeups after your missed lesson. We’re really sorry to hear you have not had a great experience and felt that way, we are continually working to improve our customer service and take this very seriously. We take great pride in offering top-quality, award winning swimming lessons by investing in our staff and facilities, which reflects the value we provide. Fantastic experience: We just started the water babies swimming lessons with our son and were highly impressed with the facilities, excellent instructor, and lesson content. Can't wait to see his love of water develop as he progresses!

Negative experience: Quite literally the worst gym. I was living in the area temporarily and asked if I could get a 6 month membership as I would be moving back within the 1 year and my move was too far to commute but less than their 50km requirement. The sales manager agreed in writing that this would be possible. Now that has happened they have said no a Director needs to sign off on this. It was not what was agreed and a huge breach of trust. Do not sign any contract or anything with this company. They are complete shafters and I will be reporting them.

Negative experience: Hideous place. They gave my wife false promises when signing her up for a membership and now won’t honour their written word. They cannot be trusted and I would stay well away. 1 star is too many!

Fantastic experience: Moved my two children (10 + 12) from another swim school a few months ago. They had been at the previous school for about 9 years and just weren't progressing. Since coming to NA they have progressed dramatically. The teachers actually watch them and correct their strokes throughout the lesson. One of their teachers at last school didn't even bother to watch them do a lap and certainly didn't adjust their technique! Very, very impressed with NA and the organisation of their school. Highly recommend!!!

Negative experience: They continued to charge our credit card for 8 months after cancelling the membership despite having confirmed it verbally and in writing. It took 10 minutes of unpleasant and heated arguing with them to get them to agree to reimburse the payments. This negative experience means our family will not return. I can see from previous google reviews that this has happened to others. Be aware. ...... Edit upon seeing the reply they have posted. Clearly they didn't read my comment. We went through the correct process in their policy to cancel the membership. Both by speaking to accounts and by sending the requested email confirming cancellation and paying for a further month as per policy. However they didn't cancel it and we didn't notice they kept charging for 8 months. Took a horrible heated argument to get them to admit and repay. They tried saying we hadn't followed process. Which we clarified by sending emails that confirmed we did. Was a very unpleasant customer experience getting this resolved.

Our records indicate that we had a signed agreement from yourself for payment and that there was no formal cancellation request in writing received, as is our standard procedure. It is important for us to clarify our policy, and we kindly want to inform you that non-attendance, unfortunately, does not constitute a valid reason for canceling payments on your behalf. While our staff strives to provide the best service, we understand that misunderstandings can occur. In the spirit of goodwill and to resolve the matter amicably, we agreed to refund payments for you, even without a formal cancellation request in writing. Our intention was to demonstrate our commitment to customer satisfaction and find a resolution to the situation. We regret that this experience has led to your decision not to return. We value our customers, and we take every feedback seriously to improve our processes. Negative experience: Lack of equipment. Rude staff. You cannot cancel "open membership" when you want it. Pools are overcrowded.
We are sorry that our gym doesn't cater for your needs in the gym. We are very much a family gym for everyday people, with a wide but limited amount of gym weights which you would have seen on your first visit. We focus our efforts on assisted exercise by using all our motivating classes.We are interested to know what you feel is overcrowding in the pool for the members only swim times? We are a busy swim school, but our members only lane swim times are not crazy busy? The 30-day notice period to cancel is in our gym membership terms and conditions, which you would have agreed to. We have in the last few days taken extra steps to add it to the front-of-house point of sale as well. Negative experience: Absolutely disgusted by the way my class and I were treated by one of the staff at northern arena. No professionalism at all worst experience of my life. Will not be coming back ever and will be telling everyone I know about my experience.

We could never endorse a certification which would be putting children in your (or other students) care, at risk. We are not prepared to 'hand-out' certificates for training if the work has not been completed.
Negative experience: North Arena is a worst gym I've ever been. It got old equipment , not enough weights. They keep raising fees but never actually invest in equipment. Outdoor area is useless unless you’re doing classes. POOL is ALWAYS BUSY. You can only come at 12pm, the rest of the time it is either extremely crowded or closed with kids competition or whatever. So you basically can’t use it. Unfriendly and rude staff, honestly most of them would benefit from customer service training. I was on flexible membership which was advertised as “cancel anytime” but as soon as I decided to cancel they were like okay you need to give us 30 days notice. Misleading 100%, they say whatever to make you sign unfortunately. They did everything so that I would never come to this terrible place again.
We are sorry that we are not the right fit for you and what you are after from a gym. We are very much a family gym for everyday people, with a limited amount of gym weights. We focus our efforts on assisted exercise by using all our motivating classes ranging from yoga to high intensity.As one of NZ's premier learn-to-swim schools, our pools are busy with learning to swim and have never been shy shouting about it. For our members, we have over 6 hrs most days of the week, swimming with a poolside coach. This is something we are very clear about on our timetable. You are also correct in saying that prices keep rising and without going too deep into economics; just like your own bills at home, ours have gone up too. The 30-day notice period to cancel is in our gym membership terms and conditions, and we have taken extra steps to add it to the front-of-house point of sale. We have never advertised our memberships as “cancel anytime.” We are genuinely sorry if you feel you have been mistreated, and we will look at how we can improve our customer service. Positive experience: This was my first visit to Northern Arena. Food can be bought onsite. Parking is a major head-ache & can get full. They have extended parking but this also fills up. Its a bit of a walk if you don't find parking close by with the kids. A place for the whole family. Wheelchair Friendly. I don't find the front desk very approachable. They give you the feeling you bugging them when approaching. 3 - STAR rating. (Because parking is a major problem) *Photos attached of the Pools*. Date: 10/20/2022

Negative experience: If I could give Northern Arena 0 stars for a review this would certainly be what I would choose. We had a casual membership running which I thought had been cancelled via an email, however Northern arena changed there banking system and payment came out under another name not alerting me to it as a gym payment. We paid 8 months of fees to use the gym which we were NOT using. They can look back and see not attendance but still happily charged us in full. When contacting to try to work something out no human compassion and absolutely no empathy were displayed. Very cold and refused to come to any arrangement. Would not recommend to anyone they only care about the money not the people or the community :(

We have not changed our banking provider for a number of years, which we were very diligent about regarding notification, so we will investigate that situation. We genuinely care about our members and the community we serve. We will work diligently to make any necessary changes to ensure that situations like this do not happen in the future.
Negative experience: Took our son here for two years, had constant problems with Northern Arena overcharging. Owed $63 one week, two weeks later supposably owed $179…. They refuse to make amendments and threaten us with legal action as well as failing to provide us with invoices that these costs have allegedly transpired from! @ $23 a session - how could $63 change to $179 in the space of 12days - any answers guys!?? Scammy behaviour and they will lie through there teeth about it when called out. They just demand money that doesn’t belong to them and will triple your bill if your not paying attention. They will also charge you long after you have removed your child from there system Two years and he can’t swim and almost drowned under there supervision in which we removed him from there services. Highly disappointed and do not recommend Northern Arena to any parents out there trying to get there loved child a necessary life skill The one thing you don’t want to be as a business - bad service and bad pricing as a package. How in two years did they fail to teach my child how to roll on his back and float to save his life Yet alone swim? They are far from ‘ Professional swim instructors ‘ They yell at the children with attitude, it’s appalling. They made my 7 year old sit and watch because they couldn’t be bothered to teach him. Our son is 7 years old, his sessions as of July 22 should have cost $23. We have invoices showing them charging us $42 - for ONE 30minute group session. STAY AWAY IF YOU CARE FOR YOUR CHILDREN !!!!

Negative experience: Can’t believe the the outstanding swimming school has such poor customer service from receptionist. Could you please take seriously to training your receptionist? Customers from different countries, if English is not our first language, could please respect your customer? Don’t say rude words to your customer please! Negative experience: Front of house staff not very enthusiastic and quite rude, prices are quite high and also don't cater for people paying in cash as they can't figure out the payment side of things without a card on file which is a nightmare for grand parents wanting to pay cash. Instructors are lovely and friendly and great with the kids.

Negative experience: Very disappointed with my visit here. I came in on a Saturday to sign up for their 3 visit Gym pass to try out the equipment and training classes. First day was fine, no issues and the facility was nice. Wasn't given a tour of the place and vicinities so was a bit lost to begin with. I came again the following day (Sunday), hoping to book a class and train, only to be told that I was only signed up for a 1 day visit pass. I pointed out to the receptionist that it should have been a 3 day pass as per the website, to which she simply responded that it was a 1 day pass only. Didn't offer to fix the issue or provide any help.

Negative experience: Unfortunately as much as I recommended this place and I got them over 10 members fam and friends we will all leave from there I called to put my membership on hold coz I went for surgery and now they said it’s not noted on you account and we tried to reach you yes they did reach but I didn’t pay attention to the emails coz I knew that thing already got sorted I didn’t even knew that was for that reason they kept charging me and it was over $500 that I had to pay What I can say they lost client and over 10 people they will be leaving soon coz what they did. Negative experience: Bad customer service,specially the front desk,no patient and no respect at all. The auto payment is so rude.

Fantastic experience: Great and helpful staff- especially Chelsea, who provided guidance on how to operate the chair hoist to access the pool which for a wheelchair user like myself is crucial. Very much enjoyed and appreciated my time in the pool.

Fantastic experience: I have been in twice and I can say hands down it is great place. Located in the heart of Silverdale it boasts a great gym and pool area where they have won numerous awards. The swimming programmes are tailored to children's abilities as well as ages and the staff are friendly. I heartily recommend Northern Arena

Fantastic experience: My children did swimming lessons at Northern Arena for 4 years, working their way up through quite a few teachers. All the teachers were amazing and patient with the kids, making them feel confident and comfortable. Regarding the previous negative review, I would like to point out that, from our time there, the child in the wheelchair and the child with additional needs were always treated with the same dignity and respect as every other child and the staff didn’t hesitate to help them feel welcome and included.

Fantastic experience: Great swim school. My son had an intensive swimming course there and had dramatic improvement! The instructors were loud and clear with their instructions. You can tell the children are there to learn and not muck around. The pool water is a bit on the cool side and parking can be a problem, but overall very happy with this swim school!

Negative experience: You certainly don't treat people with mental illness very nicely. I was quite shocked and dismayed at being tagged teamed by the 3 of your staff today. Absolutely disgusted with the way you went about it. Have used your facility in the past , but will never be back and I will not be recommending your facility after that performance. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Fantastic experience: I love this place, the trainers are all top notch and really put their heart and soul into it. There is a real family vibe to the place where everyone gets along and supports each other - not the ego and bravado I have previously noticed in many members at Les Mills for example. The arena is a well appointed gym with great facilities - but its the staff and other members that really make this place for me.

Negative experience: Not family friendly. $25 each for my 4yo and I to go for a paddle. Just as well we have beaches.
Hi David, we are a private learn to swim facility. Our family swim weekend afternoon swim times are a perk of our regular fitness and learn to swim members. We recommend your local council facilities for casual swimming.

Positive experience: Thinking of changing where I bring my child for lessons . find my child progresses but Too many kids put into one lesson at a time so find kids not having another room to swim and bumping into each other. Also it wouldn’t hurt if the staff were a little more friendly at reception could smile as people walk past and actually say hi and bye once in a while does make a difference to make people feel more comfortable and welcoming coming just saying :)
Great to hear your child is progressing. Please do not hesitate to talk to the deck supervisor regarding your overcrowding of lessons concern. We are also putting things in place to ensure reception is more welcoming for you and everyone else. Thank you for your feedback
Fantastic experience: Love the gym here, nice friendly staff too. The pools are nice too, good for kids swimming lessons and and nice clean bathrooms/changing rooms. They seem to do a lot of maintenance to keep things at a high standard and a nice environment.

A late reply, but lockdown has given us chance to rectify some of this issue by chaning the whole structure of classes. Thanks for the review.
Positive experience: Needs a safe Childrens/ toddlers play area for when siblings etc are in lessons. + more family change / shower space.
Positive experience: Very good swimming school. But I do agree with someones review saying that they need safe area for little kids. I wish they make fixed play pin area in changing room that will help a lot of mums life. I often struggle as my little one runs around while i help my order one get changed.
