Brackenridge Country Retreat & Day Spa

Negative experience: I was here 2024. There was a lovely welcome platter and complimentary bottle of wine, which was the highlight. The beauty spa was most disappointing and very expensive. Most of the time I was left alone after product was slapped on. I felt for the cost, that a head or foot massage, while I was in the body cocoon would have made all the difference. I was just left while staff chatted amongst themselves. Also wanted to use the pool early morning, but there was a used tampon sitting at the bootom of pool and I could not get any response from reception or caretaker. I let reception know of my issues when I checked out, but was not offered any kind of sympathy for my experience. I was disappointed because I was looking forward to some down time, and to just treat myself, but Brackenridge failed me on all counts. I left feeling dismissed and ripped off.

Negative experience: Booked for a leg massage that was supposed to be 45 mins. The actual massage was 10 minutes. Very disappointing

Negative experience: When people hear that you'll be staying at Brackenridge, the response and reputation is “oooh, very nice”. The reality at the moment, however, is actually rather sad. The bones of a fantastic resort are there; you can see why people think it has the ‘ooooh-factor’. But, beneath the glossy website and photos lies a tired old relic of once better times. We stayed for two nights in Jan 2026, and so at the time didn’t make a fuss. The staff there were super friendly and I’m sure would sort out any issues had we presented them before our departure, but for two nights whilst busily attending a wedding, we didn’t have the energy to say anything until leaving. At a four-star resort, you shouldn’t need to say anything about cleanliness. I’ve stayed in backpackers that have better standards. Cleanliness should be a given. The main issue was the bathroom. I get it – I hate cleaning bathrooms at home myself – but studio 18 is in thorough need of a deep clean. From the rusty looking bathtub, to the black mould/gunk in the corners of the shower windows, and the cracked floor tile that screams infection if you were to step on it. The toilet brush was covered in loo-roll, and the bathroom tiles/grout/silicone looked horrid. These things pale into insignificance though, when you noticed the underwear from a previous guest stuffed between the sink and the wall, clearly having been there for a very long time looking at the dirt and cobwebs covering them. (If you stayed in studio 18 and lost your knickers, they might still have them at reception if you’re lucky). Four-star resort and for the price, none of this should be the case. We also chose accommodation based on being able to park right next to our room due to a non-visible mobility/health issue. Whilst Brackenridge offers this, with dedicated parking spaces, the parking is a free-for all. Our final night, we couldn’t park in studio 18’s spot, due to a very arrogant guest refusing to move their ute, and no other spaces available without us in turn stealing someone else’s spot (we wouldn’t do that to others). The resort isn’t responsible for human nature, but the interaction with such a guest and the inconvenience of having to leave my car at the carpark by the entrance/road left a sour taste. I heard on the Martinborough grapevine that this resort has recently been sold. If this is the case and the potential new owners are reading – please pay attention to the details that make this a four-star resort. Don’t neglect the simple things. Needless to say we won’t be returning – the Wairarapa has much better options. Interesting this review keeps disappearing and was never responded to like the positive reviews.

Fantastic experience: I had my wedding here toward the end of 2025. This venue and staff gave me the best day of my life! Everything about it was stunning, from the planning, to rehearsal up until the checking out the following day. Bridget and Sue run a tight ship and provide such an incredible experience, there is no other place I would have dreamed of having my wedding, they really did make it a fairy tale. I highly recommend Brackenridge not only for weddings but even for a weekend away, it is a great location and well looked after.

Positive experience: The place is nice enough and had everything we needed, but it's a bit tired (grout round tiles in bathroom needs replacing, shower over bath not accessible, pergolas covered in moss) and the grounds are not much. For the money, or less, we've had better AirBnBs in the region.

Fantastic experience: We had our wedding at Brackenridge in November and it was wonderful. Bridget, Sue and the team ran our day with professionalism and care, we had nothing to worry about knowing they were looking after us. The venue is beautiful, a perfect spot for a summer garden wedding. Our guests enjoyed being able to stay on-site and use the extra facilities, and we look forward to returning to stay in the future. Would highly recommend Brackenridge as a wedding venue but also just for a weekend away, a great spot!

Fantastic experience: This is THE place for a relaxing break away. Friendly staff, beautiful surroundings with plenty of birdsong, space, privacy, no noise or light pollution, peaceful. The spa has very friendly and professional staff who know what they’re doing! We are definitely regulars now!!

Fantastic experience: A true gem in the Martinborough countryside! I understand the comments saying it is a bit outdated, but i feel there were many elements that made this place special. It was extremely clean and peaceful. The bed was very comfortable with luxurious pillows. The blackout curtains were much appreciated. The television with access to Netflix was great. The gym was huge and the pool was also much fun. The breakfast was indeed small but the soudough bread was so good! I would suggest adding yougourt so the granola given can also be used! There was no room key (electronic) which was nice. Very close to Martinborough and I would recommend, although it was indeed higher in price than I expected.

Positive experience: Spa experience was amazing and definitely the highlight of the stay. We used the gym during our stay, and found some of the equipment in need of servicing. Our accommodation was a 2 bedroom cottage and similar to other comments, they are long overdue for a makeover, at the very least they would benefit from being double glazed to help with sound proofing, can hear lots of road noise at night, and draft stopping. The rubber seal on one of the bathroom windows was completely gone meaning that cold wind was freely blowing in. The cottage could do with a good outside wash to remove all the spiderwebs and lichen. The fireplace is a nice touch, but unfortunately the wood supplied in the basket was wet and it took ages to get the fire going. There was ample wood in the shed, but I had to sort through it to find seasoned wood in order to get a decent fire going. The cottage would have been luxurious in its day, but that was probably over 20 years ago, and is now not worth the $375 per night that we paid for it. I'd probably not stay again for the price unfortunately, as the setting is lovely and having the spa on-site was great too. Hopefully the feedback provided will be bring about some changes.

Positive experience: Always a great break away at Brackenridge. The team do a great job of making it a pleasant peaceful environment. With the fire roaring and the heatpump working the little cottages keep out the wintery weather. Stepping out into the frosty well kept grounds you get to enjoy the fresh and clear countryside.

Fantastic experience: A very nice country retreat with numerous choices of accommodation. The cottages were spacious and well provided for with firewood for the fire and a lovely selection of breakfast food including fresh eggs. The 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom cottage would be a great set up for a family holiday. The pool was very appealing too.

Fantastic experience: Brackenridge is an amazing venue, it’s beautiful and picturesque as well as extremely practical with backup options for bad weather, cottages onsite and the lovely and super efficient wedding planner extraordinaire Courtnay. We planned our wedding from Sydney and Courtnay and team made the whole experience so easy. We had wanted to be able to turn up in country and not have to do any preparations, which was a breeze with Brackenridge. Courtnay dealt with everything so expertly, including a last minute seating plan reshuffle, nothing was too much trouble. Having the accommodation onsite was important to us and as the cottages range in size it meant family groups could have an opportunity to stay and spend time together which made it an all round great experience for our guests. We also chose to have the brunch onsite the next day which meant another opportunity for us to spend time with our guests as the wedding day does speed by! Trestle & Mortar did an amazing job catering the reception and the brunch, we had so many compliments on how good the food was. Our aim from the outset was to have a relaxed family wedding which Brackenridge enabled us to do. A million thanks to Courtnay and team at Brackenridge and the team at Trestle & Mortar you made our day the wonderful experience we were hoping for. Fantastic experience: Brackenridge is one of my favourite Wairarapa wedding venues to photograph at. With Courtenay and her team in charge, you just know that everything is going to be taken care of to the highest standard, and run seamlessly. The cottages onsite are perfect for getting ready and the grounds are always beautiful no matter the season. I am always excited to work here. Food and drinks: Catering is always top notch!

Fantastic experience: A perfect birthday present for Leanne which she enjoyed immensely. Very relaxing weekend for myself and wife and dog Bella on The apartment was spacious and all amenities. The breakfast cereal were very tasty and eggs beautiful. The dawn chorus was perfect to wake up to,My wife had a most enjoyable afternoon being pampered by absolute lovely south Africa lady in the beauty Spa. We would definitely come again. Nearby activities: Martinborough is 3 min in car with all shops and good restaurants.

Positive experience: Had an overnight stay planned with a 50 min couples spa treatment booked. An hour before spa treatment we received a call to say one of the masseuse was away sick so we were downgraded to a 25 min spa treatment each instead. Rooms were not particularly clean, dust and dirt and dead bugs under tables and beds. Were really excited for the girls night away but everything seemed to be met with hurdles. Overall place was pretty and peaceful, just a little disappointed with how it all turned out.

Fantastic experience: We recently got married at Brackenridge and we had two beautiful nights there With our bridal party, family and friends. We had the absolute best bloody weekend and day ever!!! Everyone is still buzzing about what a beautiful day it was, the venue, location, food and of course our wedding ❤️ the biggest selling Point for us was that the ceremony and reception were all onsite, we could stay on site in beautiful accomodation, it came with a great caterer, and of course we got to work with Courtnay. If you are an anxious wee bride or just finding wedding planning in general stressful, you need to get yourself a Courtnay!!! Thank you for everything! We had the happiest, best day of our life and didn’t feel like even one ounce of stress. I wish we could re live our day xxx

Fantastic experience: We got married at Brackenridge this year. It was such a fabulous venue! Having stayed there previously, we knew the rooms were wonderful with so many little extras (like local eggs and fresh bread). We weren’t actually staying here on this occasion, but the majority of the venue was taken by our guests from out of town and country. They did not disappoint! As for our experience, Courtnay and the team were so organised and diligent, we felt we could totally relax and enjoy our wedding to the full extent :) what you don’t always realise when looking for a venue, is that having someone there who will manage the day and turn your vision into a reality for you is priceless. Courtnay was an absolute gift and we cannot thank her and the team enough. I cannot recommend Brackenridge highly enough whether it be for weddings, other events or just a mini break. With all our changes only 1 was missed with my mother receiving only a mini pedi rather than a spa pedi but the charge was altered without wrinkle. All around a great day out and the bride to be felt very spoilt

Fantastic experience: First time having treatment at Wharekahau, was great, lovely service, locations and the treatment was great! One feedback would be the music - you can hear music in other rooms which are all sort of competing with one another, that part wasn’t very relaxing haha but an easy fix to be on one speaker system and soundtrack. Fantastic experience: My wife and I recently had our wedding at Brackenridge. Courtenay, Sue and the whole team really went out of their way to make the day super special and smooth. The on site accommodation is perfect and all of our guests commented on how nice it was and the welcome amenities and breakfast food was a lovely surprise. The venue is great and the outside area for our ceremony is neat, tidy and well maintained. We viewed 3 wedding venues all of similar price but when we viewed Brackenridge we knew straight away it was the venue for us. If you are thinking of booking it for your big day I would say do it! All our vendors knew the venue well and you can tell that everyone enjoys going there. Thanks again team for everything! We’ll be sure to visit for a massage next time we are in town.

Fantastic experience: Loved this weekend getaway. Used the pool, and tried the spa. We had a complimentary breakfast of fresh eggs and sourdough bread. Or beautiful muesli. Grounds well kept and spring is a lovely time to visit. Would definitely recommend Rooms: Our studio was lovely, clean and roomy. So comfortable. Nearby activities: Martinborough has so many vineyards and wine tastings. Many are walkable from town centre. So many fabulous places to eat. Loved neighbour hood Cafe and Crouching tiger to eat. Also a great gin bar and Cool Changebon the corner. We also went to Stonehenge Aotearoa, we'll worth the visit and incredibly fascinating

Negative experience: Very disappointed. I 'd had a massage booked for two weeks that was cancelled the day before. Then, on the day of my other treatment I waited 20 minutes past my appointment time to be told it would be another 15-20 minutes before I was seen. It's a lovely place to hang out but I had to get back to work.

Fantastic experience: Safety: The showers over the baths need to have some sort of handrail support as you climb over the side. Other than that great pressure and plenty of room.

Positive experience: Beautiful location, the ladies in the spa were all so lovely and kind. I received the most lovely facial & beautiful nails done by a truly wonderful woman (regretfully can not recall her name). She is an absolute asset to your team. Unfortunately, the spray tan I had left awful dark splotches all over my wrists / palms of my hands. I did question this at the time as it was horrible to look at, but I was told it wouldn't dry like this. Sadly, it did, and as it was my wedding the next day, I was a bit shocked and disappointed. The beauty of Photoshop has saved the day. Please ensure your guests wash their hands post spray tan, or even use a tanning mit to buff/blend out tricky areas

Fantastic experience: Superb place to stay for our group of 14. Beautiful warm and cosy cottages, exceptionally well equipped, and reasonably priced. Very comfortable bed and great pressure in shower. Had a wonderful stay, ideal base to enjoy the region with beautiful dinner in Martinborough and visit to the nearby Palliser Ridge Station, Ngawi and lighthouse.

Fantastic experience: Lovely little spot - close to the square, quiet and with a quaint country outlook, with gym and pool access. The standalone cottage had everything we needed for a quick and comfy stay in Martinborough.

We have travelled from UK, our daughter from Dubai to stay with our NZ family. Everything was perfect enjoyed the log fire, swimming pool. Despite the rain it was very relaxing,comfortable. Negative experience: We paid a lot of money for 1 night. We left feeling so disappointed and ripped off. Over priced for what is supposed to be "luxury" the place was tired, dirty and the furniture was in need of replacing as some was broken. The best part was the dinner held elsewhere. We sent a email and never heard anything back. Save your money and stay elsewhere

Fantastic experience: We could not have picked a more perfect venue for our wedding than Brackenridge Country Retreat. Having our guests stay at Brackenridge with us gave us so much time to be able to spend with our family and friends leading up to the wedding. Courtnay and her team made the wedding day itself run flawlessly, making everything easy from start to finish. We loved being able to be hands on with the decorating, but Courtnay made it easy to step back and enjoy the day when the time came. We are especially grateful that the venue was both kid and dog friendly. The catering was incredible thanks to Trestle & Mortar and the bar set-up worked wonderfully. One of my favourite places to have stayed on our trip south. Thanks to the lovely team. I would highly recommend staying here.

Fantastic experience: What an absolutely stunning wedding and stay we had! I was bridesmaid, so firsthand saw how Courtney was on to it and so friendly and very professional. They were very helpful, even with requests after the wedding! The accommodation was clean and comfortable. Truly a wonderful experience and I would recommend Brackenridge to everyone.

Fantastic experience: I am absolutely thrilled with the full spa package that my kids gifted me for my birthday. Sam was so lovely, all of her treatments were top class. But, WOW, her hot oil head massage was so much better than I've ever experienced. A big thank you to Sam and everyone at Brackenridge for making my day so special.

Fantastic experience: Such a gorgeous little spot, beautiful fire place and lovely heated bathroom floors, perfect for the winter weather. Access to gym and pool till 10pm! Spa services were also so lush So good. Loved it and will definitely be back.

Positive experience: Had a couples massage and it was not great. We were not introduced to the people doing the massage we were told to lie on the bed and they just came in. At one point the person doing my massage left the room and I was wondering if this was the end ? At the finish my partner was asked if they wanted or tea or water but I was not asked . I thought maybe they had asked him for both of us but no when we came out just one glass of water waiting. I thought a couples massage would be the same for both but it wasn’t the type of massage we had was different .My partners experience was a lot more positive the person doing his massage asked him if he had any particular issues . I did not enjoy the experience and found my massage at times painful especially the bits where she was digging her elbow in. Will I ever go back no .
