As you walk down the hill to the lush hot pools area, you sense that Taupo DeBretts Spa Resort offers a real New Zealand experience. Tropical palms and native fauna surround the waterpark. There are two outdoor and 12 indoor naturally fed mineral hot pools at different temperatures for your comfort. Relax and unwind in the pools with air loungers, water curtains and massage seats. The mineral-rich contents and temperature of the volcanic spring water will relax muscles, purify the skin, increase blood circulation and eliminate toxins. Water playground, cold pool and the heated hydroslides will keep the kids entertained for hours!

Our comment from FitFit New Zealand about Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs:

Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs is a popular family-friendly destination located in Taupo, New Zealand. The center offers a variety of facilities, including warm thermal pools, hydroslides, and a unique spray park, making it an enjoyable spot for both relaxation and fun.

Many visitors have praised the friendly staff and the overall atmosphere of the place. Guests appreciate the clean facilities and the affordability, especially with available discounts during ongoing renovations. Families with children particularly enjoy the non-thermal heated pool where kids can play underwater, alongside the hot pools for adults to supervise.

However, some users have expressed concerns regarding the current state of the facilities. Due to renovations, a significant portion of the pools are closed, and temporary changing rooms have received negative feedback for their cleanliness. Additionally, the crowds during peak times have led to an overcrowded experience that some visitors found disappointing.

In summary, while Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs may currently be undergoing improvements, it still offers a pleasant experience with warm waters and engaging activities for families. It remains a recommended spot to relax and enjoy with a few minor caveats.

Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs: Opinions

Fantastic experience: Amazing people helped out a truck driver and his wife.. after s long few days

Ylang Ylang (Ylang Ylang) 1 year ago

Positive experience: The price is very cheap and the water is warm. I wish the shower and changing room were better.

Dylan Murphy 1 year ago

Positive experience: The main pool was okay hot enough to just soak in, the others were colder, was there an hour, got 20% discount cause the biggest pool was under construction, can't say much else, average at best but it's probably not meant to be a big deal in the first place

Haydn Murdoch 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: DeBretts Hot Springs in Taupo is an enjoyable place to visit for all the family. There are few different pools as well as hydroslides and a spray park. You can choose between just enjoying a soak or more active fun. Definitely on the compulsory visit list when you are in Taupo.

Bowen Raureti 1 year ago

Positive experience: A few renovations happening right now, but they're offering a discount. Pools were lovely and hot. The kids enjoyed the waterslide. We enjoyed the spa. A little pricey considering, but a nice couple of hours spent. Perhaps a better star rating once renos are complete.

Yvette Mcleod 1 year ago

Positive experience: Very warm pools, clean facilities and friendly staff! Not adequate seating for spectators. People put their bags all over seats so other people can't sit down. Lockers are only $3 which is fantastic.

Bob and Heidi Andrews 1 year ago

Negative experience: Currently under construction/restoration. Poor facilities and at times we were just too overcrowded in the remaining pools.

Louis 1 year ago

Positive experience: Nice hotpools, Renovations have been going on for aaaages and definitely need to be completed as the main pools and private pools need work.

Karla Galpin 1 year ago

Positive experience: Honestly. This place has gone downhill 20 years worth in the 8 years since I have been here dodge the plasters. Water in chlorinated pools is cloudy. Changing room/shower options are gross. Won’t be back. Sad. Used to be lovely.

sepideh Delavari 1 year ago

Positive experience: I heard so much about the place but it didn’t make to my expectations. Good fun for a day maybe but to stay as vacation for a few days i might not recommend since the pools are basic and one time visit would suffice. Maybe a picnic area, restaurant, movies in the pool and more variety of pools and slides could spice the place up. It wasn’t crowded though and we could relax in the pools ( school holidays visits) The cabins are clean and have small kitchen. Towels provided. Kitchen stuff are good. Has fridge, microwave, dishwasher and hot plate, rice cooker, toaster etc.

Row Zanna 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: We can't believe it's taken us this long to visit, all the fun and the thermal waters. Bonus that there is a kids non thermal but heated pool which the kids can play underwater in and a hot pool beside for the adults to supervise the kids from due to renovations happening we couldn't use all the slides or pools, just some... but there was a great discount due to this, so overall great value and lovely warm clean pools

Positive experience: Updated - two very different experiences: First - Oct 23: Was really happy to find this place. We did go the weekend after school holidays finished, so pretty quiet. I think on a really busy day, it would be packed and difficult to find a spot to sit. It's a little dated (the main slide of the three is out of action), but value for money, great! Staff were amazing, friendly and paying attention. Was supervising my son and one of the staff brought me a hot chocolate. Made my day. Only thing I would suggest, is some coordinated signature at the main road. We saw parking as we came in and assumed that was where we had to park as we weren't staying there. Turns out that we could have parked right up at the caravan park. Slides were painful to go down, where the sections of the slides join hurts as you go over it. We only got a few slides in each as it began to cause too much discomfort. Need the rubber mats to avoid this. Second - July 24: Half the park (one of the two main pools) is closed for renovations. This isn't advertised on the website (when you come from Google maps). It does say it will be fully closed in late July. So everyone is in one main pool, with a kids pool and what were two adults only, but now open to all small spas. It's not packed, but it's a different experience to prior. Also, in the fine print (and I mean really small in the website) people over 90kg can't go on the slides. This is intermittently enforced depending on the staff member. On our last trip it wasn't mentioned and we didn't see any signage about it. On this trip we had decided to go to Debretts over Waikete so that my son and I could do slides (even though they're painful from the joins). But that was a big no. So with half the pool closed and slides a no (he's autistic adhd won't do it without me), it was the wrong place to go. Point being, this shouldn't be hidden as it creates disappointment. Not sure we'll be back again.

Negative experience: For the price our family paid, we were so disappointed. Looks nothing like the photos. Very run down. A shed to change in. Not recommended.

Positive experience: Very tidy facilties, especially the bathrooms. Price for pool use is a bit too steep for me, $14 with a guest discount. Reception staff were very friendly ❤️

Fantastic experience: The best things to do in Taupo. Hot springs pool they have plenty of rooms for all age level pool. Water is very warm to hot suitable to your body. Private pool with no extra charges. Worth spending time and money.

Carey Senior 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Great place to take the family for 3-4 hours at the hot pools and hydra slides. Also good for young children. No cafe down near the pools though so bring your own food and water perhaps. Currently some pools being repaired but most facilities and pools are available. Recommended.

Vicky Bramley 1 year ago

Positive experience: Had a lovely time here, great place . Great place for family with children.

mariah anderson 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Absolutely beautiful spot to wind down after a long day. I highly recommend the private spas.

Kayla Lye 1 year ago

Negative experience: Photos must be very outdated as it looks nothing like that now. Super run down. Seems to be so many changing rooms for males but none for females except a plastic shed that stunk of urine. Toilets were absolutely filthy, 2 toilets covered in poo. No where to change a baby after swimming or to change a nappy

Zara Anderson (LEA) 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Going through renovations but always pleases! Relaxing and enjoyable.

Tania Potts 1 year ago

Negative experience: We visited De Brett’s in January whilst it was obviously under construction work and/or renovation. There were temporary changing facilities in place. We returned seven months later over the weekend to find nothing had changed or been finished. Unfortunately the temporary women’s changing facilities were still in place and were unsatisfactory (smelling of urine and very damp). The toilets had not been regularly cleaned and were still temporary facilities. I’m wondering about the timeline for the renovation. Don’t think we will return.

Emma Carey 1 year ago

Negative experience: Place is really run down and not very clean. The pool was green round the outside. Half is closed for construction. No women's changing rooms, just a make shift garden shed with no where to put anything, and a few plastic chairs. Disabled toilet floor was so wet and extremely slippery, again no where to put anything. None of the drinking water stations were working, all out of order. Really disappointing, was here a few years ago and it was top class. There's rules for no jumping into the pools and running, kids just running a muck with none of the pool assistances stepping in. The hot water was nice but not a very relaxing environment. Will go elsewhere next time.

Fantastic experience: De Bretts Spa Resort is a well landscaped retreat spot located in Central Taupō. The resort offers myriads of activities not only for the residents, but also for the public.Their hot pools can be accessed by the public between 8:30 am and 8:30pm. The entry fee is usually about $24 per adult & $13 for children. Luckily we had a 20% discount on the day we booked our slots. They have two large thermal pools, a water park, child friendly swimming pool, hot tubs and private pools, which are free of cost and can be availed on first come first serve basis. There are plenty number of private pools, which can well accommodate 3-4 people in a single room. Whilst many hot springs permit persons above 18 years of age, De Brett’s resort is one such place that is child and family friendly. Thus, a must visit place if one is visiting Taupo and wants to have an unforgettable experience with family

Fantastic experience: I have been coming here since I was a kid always great memories the pools could definitely have a update but I have always had a good time regardless 5 stars :)

Anon Amas 1 year ago

Negative experience: Hydroslides are only rated to 90kg, so yeah if you're a mid 40s dad wanting to take your kids, sorry you are classed as morbidly obese and cannot ride. What a stupid limit for a family slide. Gold Coast slides are rated for 130-150kg riders. I'm 183 cm and 99kg, not a lightweight but seriously 90kg is pretty restrictive.

danella aqllen 1 year ago

Negative experience: this review is for the pools only. Dont be fooled by the beautiful photos on here it looks absolutely nothing like that it is so dirty we paid alot of money to stand in urine soaked fake grass shed with four chairs in it to change. They were bloody revolting reaked of piss and The toilets and showers were even more revoliting.

Fantastic experience: The first time here was awesome myself and my daughter loved it!

Tessa Morgan 1 year ago

Negative experience: Absolutely disgusting. Is not worth the money! Cleaner swimming in the lake. We stayed there for no longer then 20 minutes. Nearly was concussed several times on the water side is not safe do not recommend.

Positive experience: Amazing place (even with upgrade building work going on). Perfect for a nice soak in the hot water after a few days driving. Lovely staff and great price for a family of 6. Unfortunately the woman's & family's changing rooms being upgraded but they have provided temporary showers & changing room which is better than all waiting for the one disabled room/shower.

Bjork Bjork Bjork 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Going through a few refurbishments at the moment, but still a great place to visit. The package that we purchased was great! It gave us 45mins in the private pools and we got to choose which temperature. Change rooms were clean, lots of space for storage fur personal belongings as well, with a choice of secure lockers. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Deepika Malhotra 1 year ago

Positive experience: The rooms were decently clean and well equipped. Spacious and soundproof. Minor issue like there was no charging socket near the bed, the bunker room didn't have any heater blankets or room heater because of which the room felt so cold that we were not able to use it and had to share the main bedroom. Overall decent stay but felt that the room was slightly over charged for what they offer. Hot pool is not included in the room but if you stay then you get discounted rates. The pools were clean and well maintained.

Oliver McGarry-Burford 1 year ago

Negative experience: The pools themselves were quite nice, but the environment at least while I was there was not. The life guards were paying very little attention, and stood idle as a group of kids decided to throw balls around far to close to elderly couples and other patrons. The pools were undergoing some renovations, which is completely fine and I'm sure this is their off season, but the female changing rooms and toilets were in an appalling state according to my partner and in a dark and reasonably secluded spot for a public area, they could have partitioned off half of the male changing room as this area was not affected, or better set up and maintain the temporary ones they had in place. Because of these renovations too, I do feel the full price of entry isn't quite worth it as quite a few of the pools were closed, but I do understand they still need to make money and don't want to increase the number of people coming in whilst at a lower capacity. Just to add to it, when the ladies from my group decided to use the family changing room when getting out of the pools, it was in use for close to 20 minutes, by a singular male, I understand there is little that can be done about this, but it did add to the negativity feel towards this place and perhaps could have been avoided if the life guards paid more attention. I would recommend giving it some time before visiting, let the renovation finish first.

Fantastic experience: TAUPO DeBretts hot spring is THE BEST OF THE BEST PRIVATE HOT POOL IN NZ, we visit on Wednesday afternoon 19/6/24, the lady receptionist is very friendly, she explains to us few things, and we get in straight away to private hot pool, very nice, big and deep pool, it is not like a normal standards size spa pool, it is big basically you can swim and walk in the pool, do the therapy, the pool itself very clean, the hot water keep flowing and very rich with minerals, we stay 45 minutes, we get out feeling our best, skin very soft and smooth, all pains and aches are gone, it’s worth to try

Bernadette Geale 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Just a lovely experiences even with on-going maintenance. Can't not go while in Taupo. Took my Aussie sisters, they fell in love. Night time in winter is the best time to visit.

Helen R 1 year ago

Negative experience: Very expensive for what it is. It's currently got some areas under construction, so we did get a 20% discount. Make shift women's changing room was really poor. Toilets were gross. Perhaps after construction is finished, it might be better but as it is I wouldn't go back at that price. Water was a good temperature and relaxing though.

Thomas Lynchehan 1 year ago

Negative experience: We paid $14 each to enter as we stayed at the associated holiday park (which was very good & I would recommend). However with half the Hot Springs site was undergoing refurbishment, so for us (adults) there was only really the main heated pool, as the jacuzzi was being used by babies and parents. The pool was a good temperature and quite large, but like the rest of the place a bit faded & had clearly seen better days. The reason we chose this over competitors was the slides - which were fun, however after using them once, we were accosted by the "pool attendant" and told we would have tramp back to the reception in our trunks (it was cold) and purchase a slide pass for $6 each. The receptionist never mentioned this & given the slides are a major selling point, and I have never been to a water park were slides are EXTRA to use it felt like a bit of a scam frankly. Overall it was poor value for $14, but for the full adult price $24 or $30 if you want to slide! I would suggest you go to one of Taupo's many other hot springs or even the river hot springs (which are free).

Elizabeth Valleli 1 year ago

Positive experience: I feel like this place needs a big touch up such as checking their private pool quality. The water in the private pools was fine, just the spider webs dangling on the lights and the floating pieces of the wall. The public pools were good, but I did notice the life guards did not even pay attention to anyone, one was even on their phone, never guarding the slides. Speaking of which, the slides were very bumpy, I noticed rust which wasn't ideal. However despite that, I found the pool to have some charm to it, I had a conversation with someone from Switzerland and she had fond memories of this place. I loved the atmosphere of this place. I just think some of it needs a touch up.

Positive experience: Superb visit, just a little less amazing than usual at the moment with renovations being done - but it is great that the property is getting an upgrade. And I was impressed that the price was reduced to acknowledge that the renovations meant one of the pools was empty.

Meg 1 year ago

Positive experience: I was a little disappointed with the lack of private changing rooms for females during the large renovation currently happening. Same amount of people squashed into the only one pool available so a little annoying. Normally a wonderful place to take the kids.

Negative experience: Main hot pool was closed on arrival for upgrades, 30 percent discount applied due to this, still cost $60 for 2 adults and 2 kids. Pools weren't as hot as they used to be overall was pretty disappointing.

Fantastic experience: Currently on renovation but they offered you discounts. A good place to chill and relax with your family. Kids will love the slides but take note that there is additional payment to that.

Fantastic experience: Great pools, some being overhauled at the moment, but still lovely. Staff were also great, helpful, and friendly, as were the ducks. Haven't been here for years. We loved it!

Ms W 1 year ago

Negative experience: Only half of the pools are open, yet the remaining pools were overflowing with people (second week of school holidays). Pools themselves were lukewarm and dirty. The whole complex feels run down…. this wasn’t helped by the temporary woman’s changing rooms and toilet facilities which were smelly and tiny. They need to restrict pool user numbers while the pool is undergoing the upgrade - our experience felt chaotic and anything but relaxing.

anna mckay 1 year ago

Negative experience: Went on an evening in the school holidays, pools seemed very tired and facilities dated. Toilets were not cleaned, unfortunately not how we remembered it. Kids had fun on the slides! Pools under temperature

Anne Lieke 1 year ago

Negative experience: The slide has a weight limit of 90 kg. Very dissapointed with the state of the swiming pools. Showers and toilet are very dirty. The changing room of the ladies are a shed with 6 plastic stools in. No trash bin for nappies or anything alse

Lucy Crawford 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: We stayed at the Hotel DeBretts and walked down the hill. Otherwise, if you are visiting, there is plenty of parking. Prices were discounted because we were staying but I reckon it is a reasonable at normal price. There is a little bit of renovation going on, but nothing too big. We had two boys aged 9 and 10, and they had a great time in the water park slide area. They were gone most of the time, which gave mum and dad time to enjoy the large pool with jets coming out of the side of the pool, or you could sit on steps. Pretty busy, so do be aware there are lockers to pop your belongings in or bin shevels things to store stuff. Womens changing rooms are near the entrance and men's and uni sex are near the large pool. There is a water station to refill water bottles or uses of a fountain by the uni sex changing rooms.

Fantastic experience: We stayed at the De Bretts over the weekend and WOW. It's such a lovely little camping spot. It was our first trip away with our caravan, and we are so chuffed we chose to take it to De Bretts. The facilities are really lovely and all locate centrally. The bathrooms specifically were really clean and a lovely setup. A nice big kitchen for doing dishes and the SKY TV was a hit for a little boy early in the morning. The reception had a great range of snacks, hot and cold as well as delicious barista coffee and hot chocolate! It is an awesome spot for kids as it has a huge jumping pillow, a playground as well as the hotpools a 1 minute walk down the hill. It couldn't have been any better! We would love to return one day!

Fantastic experience: Thoroughly enjoyed what could well be considered a hidden gem! Decided to pass through on our final night in Taupo and don't regret it! A tranquil spot with heated pools, private spas (with no extra charge!), hydro slides - with the perks of no lines, fuss or over capacity. Has that resort feel to it. Well worth it - will visit again!

Tomma Liu 1 year ago

Negative experience: Save your money and go to the AC Baths in town. This place is so dirty and grimy - we had to change in a plastic shed with slimy carpet which smelt so bad, all pools were so dirty - mould and slime everywhere, leaves and dirt in spas. No bubbles going in spas at all. The kids play area was so dirty. I counted about 6 band aids, 2 ear plugs, used bottles, food packets in gardens. There are a total of 4 wooden recliner lounges for he whole park. Water slides were dirty & only 2 going - honestly the last time they were checked for safety looks like 1980. If we didn’t pick up a disease here, I’ll be surprised. If you’ve been to Hanmer or any other water park / thermal pools - lower your expectations.

Fantastic experience: Very fun experience. The showers were in great condition. Unfortunately the biggest slide was closed. We were very satisfied with the private pools as the water temperature was very warm and relaxing.

Willem Vermeulen 1 year ago

Negative experience: Not worth the $ . Would have rather just gone to the lake. Splash planet, lake taupo holiday resort no issue with kids going down slides. Here have to be a certain height. Lady at counter was quite rude. We accepted their verdict and after she still said to take off he's shoes. This was after the fact. 3 out of the supposedly 12 pools functioning. Hard pass. Thought we would give it a go even though friends warned us not to.

Nikhil D'Souza 1 year ago

Positive experience: This place has aged over time, but we still enjoyed the pools. Some part of it was under construction and a discount was reflected in the price because of that. But overall not a bad place. Place could have a bit more seating options for spectators. Just note that the parking is at the top and you will have to walk down the steep slope to the pools and back up again when you are done.

Pleiades Nebula 1 year ago

Positive experience: Small hot springs place. It can be very noisy and crowded. You can get the key to a private room for free. It has an atmosphere of a communal playground. Don't expect a lot. You can get towels there. Changing rooms are quite limited. Parking is just in front of the place.

Evan Miller 1 year ago

Negative experience: It's hard to recommend if you have a toddler, because there's no changing facilities for them. Normally I wouldn't give a 1 star because of that. But when you're advertising yourself as a family spa and that's not really fair on families with toddlers or younger. Maybe come back when the renovations are complete and hopefully it's better then. Nice pools though

Positive experience: Lovely place. It is a bit run down but the staff are friendly and the hot springs are amazing. We stayed in the area for family so no idea how the private pools are. They provide you with floaties and also water slides are pretty good. Great way to relax in the hot springs. My kids absolutely loved it.

Fantastic experience: Absolutely love coming here , all the way from the NT Australia , the temperature is the same as what we get in the atmosphere at this time of year??! The private pools are my favourite, see you again next year!

Negative experience: Very disappointing - really expensive for a family 2 x adults 2 x kids $72 that was with a 20% discount- we literally stayed for 15mins and left. That price also included the slides for our kids - which they were really disappointed in. They are renovating and do offer a 20% discount, however for what they charge not worth it. The green pool I know is not treated - however it could still be cleaned of things floating in it.
