Tokaanu Thermal Pools: Opinions
Fantastic experience: As always, such a great place to visit when I'm on holiday. Unfortunately, the public pool is closed for an undisclosed amount of time - however, the private pools were great! Service from staff at the front counter were very helpful and polite!
Fantastic experience: Beautiful area the pools are lovely and warm great for arthritis
Fantastic experience: Hidden gem, very quiet place. Public pool is closed.
Fantastic experience: Lovely staff and beautiful soak in nice hot water me and the kids loved it
Fantastic experience: Love it!!.. a must place to visit. Great for couples, familys, also private mineral baths. Awesome!!
Positive experience: Public pool currently closed for maintenance. Private pools nice but a bit expensive for what it is. Still nice to soak in after a ski day!
Fantastic experience: Lovely swim today as we travelled. Staff were so nice and even helped nump start out vehicle in the carpark.
Fantastic experience: Natural pool was fantastic. And HOT!!
Fantastic experience: Always a great geothermal pool dip here
Negative experience: If you want a relaxing experience, that's not the place. The banging gates and non stop "your time is up" anouncements on the speaker will ruin your experience. The place is not well maintained and it's quite dirty. Still, affordable thermal pool, hence 2 stars.
Fantastic experience: Best place to go for a good soak after a long day.
Fantastic experience: Been there many time while in the area
Fantastic experience: Love stopping here for a reset of body and mind
Negative experience: No notice at all to say public pool closed for maintenance.. In the school holidays?and private pools supposed to be open until..9!? It's only 6 30pm and there is no one here
Fantastic experience: Photos are taken from the reserve behind the thermal pool. Great 20-minute walk with a lovely thermal active area to see.
Fantastic experience: Very cool old school thermal pools. Only 20 mins per session but the minerals make your skin feel amazing.
Fantastic experience: First time visiting these pools and have to say my experience was great from the lovely ladies at ticket counter who fitted us in when it was busy ,to the pools , just the right temperature nice and private and have to say my sore back feels really good after a soak. Will go back again and absolutely recommend .
Fantastic experience: This was my first time visiting in probably 25+ years. At the time of visiting the public pool was closed but there were plenty of private pools available. The private pools are quite hot but in my opinion they were just right especially on the day we went which was cold and drizzly. The allowed time in the pool of 20mins is perfect. Staff are really nice. The place is old but it adds to the atmosphere of the area. They also provide information on the area and seeing the trout swim in the nearby stream was pretty cool.
Fantastic experience: Clean hot mineral baths, just the thing on a winter's day. Outdoor pools closes this evening.
Negative experience: Drove an hour to go for a swim to find out public pool was closed, 3 hour wait for a 20 minute swim. Said it was open on web page. Disappointed in this.
Positive experience: The pools were hot, and just what I needed after a day walking the crossing.
Fantastic experience: ABSOLUTELY love this place! The staff are always super friendly and the pools, while may not be gold plated and crystal clear... are the epitome of a hidden gem. We always call into the pools for a private soak when we are up that way. The best way to start, and end our road trips. Reasonably priced and the best thing is the open roof of the private room, such a lovely feeling when it rains! Rustic and not the typical 'tourist attraction' and that is what makes this place so unique and a go-to for us. Not too busy at all. Added bonus seeing the trout hanging out under the bridge. Recommended to all that need a relaxing hot spa. Naturally heated and the minerals make the skin so soft. We always feel so mellow and chilled out after our visits. We wished we lived closer!
Fantastic experience: Simple and all that is needed. Excellent experience
Fantastic experience: Make sure you have a look at the mudpools on the short walk around the back.
Positive experience: Pretty ordinary, and no hot showers.
Fantastic experience: Went there with girlfriends! Really enjoyed it! Very clean! Private pool has an open air at the top! Very good idea! Grear staff! Lovely walk !
Positive experience: The free walk is quite nice. Installations are quite basic but it's nice and reasonably priced. They missed the opportunity of having mountain views on the private spa, which would add value.
Fantastic experience: The short walk behind the pools was almost better than the actual pool. we tried one of the private rooms for that experience before going in the main pool. I can see why there is a time limit on the private pools, i felt like a cooked lobster coming out of them : ) Someone was feeding the trout in the stream cheesy pouffs. Probably all sorts of wrong, but it was fun to watch. We went in mid March, not crowded at all.
Positive experience: Great walk right next to it. Public pool was out of action until further notice though
Fantastic experience: We love these pools. When heading further north, or east, we stay in Turangi overnight just to go to the pools. Great value for money. If you do have a wait, you can go and do the walk just outside the pools. We have only had to wait once, and that was about 10 minutes.
Fantastic experience: Nice place
Positive experience: Superb flat easy walk for nzjane pushing a wheelchair .. Boiling mud pools steaming pools and lazy trout under the bridge
Fantastic experience: Pools and facilities are basic, but the water was lovely and we initially had the public pool to ourselves. There’s also a nice geothermal walk right there and trout hanging out in the river. At $8 an adult it’s definitely good value!
Positive experience: Quel plaisir de se baigner dans de l'eau si chaude. Le circuit entre les geysers est rapide mais bien aménagé.
Fantastic experience: Literally been coming here for 35 years. Still the same with a fresh paint so very cool.
Fantastic experience: A wonderful out of the way spot to enjoy a relaxing thermal soak! The staff are so very friendly and the prices are very reasonable! Definitely worth the visit!!!
Fantastic experience: Just had the most amazing soak after crossing the tongariro! Molly and Evan were so fun to chat with and great hosts at the resort. Definitely recommend the private soaks before the main pool. It's nice to have such an authentic atmosphere to relax in.
Positive experience: Used to come here as a kid, it has barely changed at all in 35 years. Private pools are mineral water, public pool is chlorinated water that has been geothermally heated. The short walk is free and very worthwhile. Don't forget to look for trout as you cross the bridge, they are often hanging around!
Fantastic experience: Wonderful simple pool came on a wet summer day loved being in the pool in the rain
Positive experience: Excellent private pools and 20 mins is a good length of time. Great to cool off in the main pool
Fantastic experience: Definitely recommend just going for the public pool access, just as nice and almost no one there so it was nice and quiet. Changing rooms and toilets available, however only one shower outside by the pool and it was cold !
Positive experience: Not sure if I can recommend this place taking into account number of other place in the area…
Positive experience: Public pool needs some renovation. It felt like a Wes Anderson movie, a bit on the rustic side. Not to worry, everybody else opted for the private pool so we enjoyed the warm thermal waters in total calm and peace.
Fantastic experience: A busy wee spot but had a lovely soak in the public pools. We were keen for a private pool which was well priced but the wait was a touch too long for us. It was awesome seeing the trout over the bridge as we came in too and we really enjoyed the thermal walk despite the pouring rain. Will happily come back again
Positive experience: Clean, warm public thermal pools. Small geysers in the grounds which blow every 45mins or so (when we were there). Fun with small kids.
Negative experience: Tak možná jsme čekali moc, po návštěvě okolí Rotorua… tohle podle mě za návštěvu nestoji, bazény zpoplatněné, procházka kolem termálů zdarma, ale neudržované, zarostlé… Škoda…
Fantastic experience: Perfect hidden gem to relax after the Tongariro crossing. Cheap, clean, not busy at all. Highly recommended!
Fantastic experience: Nice. Clean. Small shop at reception for drinks and a coffee. Pool was nice for our family to enjoy and then a short walk around the Thermal park to explore with the kids.
Fantastic experience: Great fo my hauora and tinana
Fantastic experience: C'est à voir, c'est un lieu intéressant et on se demande vraiment ce qui se passe sous nos pieds.
Fantastic experience: Must visit on a cold day or when you are coming off the mountains. You can hire towels for $3 and 20 mins of soaking is all you need.
Fantastic experience: Just too good to see nature without any restrictions. We didn't get into the pools but these are pictures from the outside
Fantastic experience: Awesome place to relax and a relaxing walkway just to finish off the experience will definitely be back again
Fantastic experience: A very beautiful place, hot tubs fantastic be sure to make the effort and do the walk, nice and easy well worth it!!!!! And it's free
Positive experience: We are serial visitors, live local and live it’s unpretentious simplicity. Would give 5 stars if they could reduce the slurp noise of the overflows!!!
Fantastic experience: We had the best experience chilling or rather sweating it out in the private pools. A must try and a very unique experience.
Negative experience: Public pool closed until further notice. Only option is a 20min limited private pool, with no public pool afterwards. (Usually public pool access after private pool is included). Feels like a bate and switch.
Fantastic experience: Great little walk around the back. And you get to see ttrout in the creek. The pools are ok but there's a time limit on the indoor pools. It's dumb.
Fantastic experience: nice hot pool suits for family
Fantastic experience: I've stopped here for 40 years now and still love it. A great way to break a trip down. Private pools getting a bit shabby but the water is lovely!
Negative experience: Public pool closed although nothing on the website. The smaller public/private pool was too hot for our toddlers. But the worse thing was the floor in the ladies toilets was so hot it burnt our 2 year Olds feet. We complained. Staff weren't interested.
Positive experience: Ok place, could do with an upgrade Staff seem bored and just want your money. Pools were tepid. Very basic changing rooms and facility. But still nice to get warm.
Positive experience: This visit the site was very overgrown and my kids could not see too much as we saw the first time we visited 2 yrs ago
Positive experience: Immaculately clean and good value. Large public pool, but also large private pools to relax in. Great facility and a worthwhile stopover on the through journey. Older facilities but freshly painted and clean
Fantastic experience: Loved visiting here, clean and well kept, we paid $14 each for 25 minutes in a private pool which was amazing! Definitely would pay at least 4 times that most other places. My body felt so relaxed afterwards. Would highly recommend and would definitely visit again
Positive experience: It was great, busy over this holiday period mixed with some average weather but still plenty on space to not be bumped into. Water was lovely and warm, and it was a great space to bring the baby and family to chill.
Fantastic experience: 3rd time here and am a returning customer for the private pools. Haven't been to the main pools as I think there chlorine?? Double check. The mineral private pools are where it's at though. Do change before you go as it's only a 20 min session and when your times up you also have to leave and get changed in the change rooms rather than your pool room. Overall a clean and affordable place to go for the most relaxing hot swim ever. I always leave here feeling brand after all my long hikes hence why I'm now addicted. Highly recommend
Fantastic experience: My go to after a trip in the National Park. Private spas, public pools for all ages. Bathroom facilities available. Staff are great. The bonus, fresh water trout to sit and stare in awe.
Fantastic experience: So relaxing the private pools are fantastic. Beautifully designed and clean. There are always lots of tourists that come to experience and explore this wonderful place. You can go walking around the hot mud pools (very safe) and then enjoy the relaxation of the pools. Beautiful staff there to help you on the way.
Positive experience: Spartan, clean, and pleasant. We had a private bath as well as using the public pool. There were only a handful of other parties and the atmosphere was relaxed. The water was wonderfully warm. The prices amazingly low. Staff helpful and friendly.
Positive experience: Overall a pleasant experience. Booked a 20 min private pool session which was nice and gives access to public pool afterwards. Public pool was large enough to allow bathers bit space and smaller children's pool. Public changing rooms are a little small and bit crowded at peak times. Afterwards the free thermal walk is interesting....however the geothermal activity seems to have reduced slot since my last visit in early 2000's.
Positive experience: Nice little place to have a short walk around. Is right behind the thermal pools
Fantastic experience: An amazing place to visit just south of lake Taupo, an awesome loop walk and thermal pools. Feed the fish off the bridge, a must stop
Fantastic experience: Always love visiting here. Nice little walk before or after your swim. Bonus kids got to feed the trout under the bridge. We hadn't left before I had birthday requests to return
Fantastic experience: Well worth visiting. Short thermal walk around the hotsprings was free to enter. Keep to the paths. Then a visit to the thermal pools. $14 each for the private mineral pool and then out to the public pool.
Positive experience: To hire a private thermal pool for 20minites for 3 adults & 1 child costs under $55, my mokopuna who is 1 was free. Very peaceful it was a beautiful way to unwind and reset before returning home. You can go on a thermal hikoi (walk), it is also a place for the trout to spawn so you can't do any fishing there, you can fish further on up the road though.
Fantastic experience: Cool and free, what else you need? Nice to see the local geothermal activity in action. But if you dare, there is a private bath at the walking track that is reasonably priced.
Positive experience: Lovely to see the pools again. Very clean and well maintained. Nothing flash and nothing fancy here.
Positive experience: Stay on the thermal walk track if you're going to do a walk around the public areas, even the free thermal pools area for bathing and cooking can be dangerous, the supposed safe areas can spray boiling water at random which happened near me on the 14th of July causing a minor injury when I backed away (not burnt so its ok). It was totally unexpected, possibly there is major underlying volcanic activity authority's are not disclosing for this area. This will save you needing to do an ACC claim. Nice area but probably very unstable even though the geo site says it was caused by wind interference with activity recording instruments. Do pay for the hot pools use it will be worth your while and a lot safer.
Fantastic experience: Great local gem!! Nothing fancy but definitely worth a visit. It was quite busy when we came but there was still plenty of space to sit & relax in the warm waters. Our kids loved it. The ladies at the desk were lovely as well.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely the best experience, the quite walk will have you gasping at every corner with thermal magic, then a perfect relax in the private pools followed with a swim in thermal pools, the whole experience 10/10.
Positive experience: We stopped by after a day of skiing. We opted for the private pool first which as $14pp for 20 minutes. You also had access to the public pools afterwards. I found the private pool to be on the hotter side. The outdoor pool was warm and more enjoyable for me. The outdoor pool was much busier though. There is plenty of parking in front of the pools. Just be aware that if you arrive too late there might not be any private pools available if they are busy.
Fantastic experience: We were alone on the free hike. A good place to see the hot water action.
Fantastic experience: Excellent location to just relax. Ladies gave us more than the 30mins and it was fantastic. The water was beautifully warm and really friendly staff. Well done on a great place to just relax. Pricing was also excellent
Positive experience: Public swimming pool is free and really great. It is treated so fine to put heads under. Private pools are ok, nice and hot and cooling showers are refreshing these arent treated though so no heads underwater. I think the private facilities could do with an upgrade but the prices are fair.
Positive experience: A choice of several private pools or a public outdoor pool... a pool for adults and a second smaller pool for children under 5 (and their caregivers). Adequate changing room space and toilets - clean. An enjoyable experience and I'd be pleased to return when I'm the area again...
Positive experience: A little dated and a little quite. Went in the evening with a group of about 10. Was VERY quiet - Almost eerily so. Asked if we could have some music playing quietly and got a flat out no. I do think it would have added to the atmosphere
Fantastic experience: After a complete refurbishment, only reopened 7months ago, clean, great staff, and the pools are an experience not to be missed!
Fantastic experience: Awesome scenery, interesting sight, without the bad egg smell.
Fantastic experience: Walked around the thermal scenic walk before we went into the pool complex. Friendly staff. Got a private pool. Lovely hot and relaxing pool.
Fantastic experience: These hot pools are fantastic value. We go for the private pool as the water isn’t treated, but there is a public pool ideal for kids. The walk around the geothermal activity is free and has a huge variety of pool types. We come every time we travel to or from Taupo. It’s unspoilt by commercialisation, just like New Zealand used to be.
Positive experience: 價錢合理,乾淨整潔
Fantastic experience: 太早來,我們沒進去浴場,卻意外的享受了一小圈美麗的地熱景點。
Positive experience: Basic facilities with only a cold outdoor shower. However the pool temp is great! You can put your head under in the outdoor pool.
Fantastic experience: Epic place to visit pools were nice and quiet and not to hot, the thermal walk was also very nice with lots of activity
Fantastic experience: Beautiful spot, lovey staff. 10 out of ten would go again if I am ever back in the area
Positive experience: Only the private pools were open. The staff member was very helpful and friendly. Lovely to soak in the warm water. Maintenance needs some work.
Fantastic experience: Stop off on way to Taupo. Great to relax and warm up after freezing cold desert road trip. Great value. 25mins certainly long enough to be in water.
Negative experience: We were given room 14. Wasnt very relaxing at all the level of water was not right with the filter and it keeps making loud gludging noises hard to relax and heaps of bugs in pool very disappointing 5 minutes and we were out.
