Uprising: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Good vibes and expereinced team! Great opportunity to improve climbing skills
Fantastic experience: Great place with an incredible environment! Lots to do, good variety of climbs plus gym and yoga options. Staff are lovely and very helpful, especially Ilya who is also an amazing coach. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Awesome experience, great facility, interesting climbs even for beginners
Positive experience: Lots of climbing routes! Plenty of space and good spacing between routes, not overly cluttered with handholds. 3/5 stars as the instructors didn’t manage their students well at all. While we were there one instructor (who seemed to have been working there for a long time) was managing lots of 6-10 year olds students and he freely let them roam around without managing their safety properly. He wasn’t even watching them properly. There were many times we saw other climbers on the wall and the students will run below them or stand in their fall zone. The instructor wasn’t even looking. It wasn’t just a couple of times but it happened so often so much so that the more aware climbers just sat down and watched the students take over the entire wall. Overall, this is a good place to climb with plenty of interesting routes and a good range of routes to accommodate beginners and experts
Thanks for the feedback Hui, great to hear you enjoyed the boulders. We have discussed the Monday session with the instructors and highlighted this feedback, whilst we absolutely trust in their coaching it is always good to reiterate safe practice and the need for extra attentive supervision at busy times. Typically 3-4pm on a weekday can be a busier time with youth groups and other children climbing with parents after school, outside of those times it is a more adult centric atmosphere.Happy to discuss further if you wish to contact us via phone or email.
Positive experience: cold carpark
Positive experience: One of the best climbing gyms I’ve been to, BUT jeez, turn the ac off! It’s freezing cold, I couldn’t warm up at all
Positive experience: Not too busy. Good selection of problem styles and grades.
Fantastic experience: Great place unfortunately I am horrible at climbing but still great fun
Fantastic experience: fantastic place to climb and a lovely atmosphere. only down side is it’s a little chilly thanks to the bountiful air ventilation
Positive experience: The gym is great. Staff are as good as they need to be. The people are friendly and there are new climbs to do semi-frequently. 3.5/5 * I would rate 4.5/5 if the floors would get cleaned as frequently as they were 4 years ago. In the slab area of the gym, don't dare to look where the mats meet the wall, Hair, dust, fluff, everything you wouldn't want to touch you will find in there.<3 Love the gym, please bring back the leg press & vacuum the mats. (Mainly the corners)
Positive experience: Went to blocland, good for 30 minutes of climbing and sliding but not enough to keep interest of a 4 year old much longer than that.
Fantastic experience: Real nice boulder gym with all amenities. The café is really nice as well.
Positive experience: It’s a pretty mint place but I find 20+ dollar day pass price a tad much especially considering the last time I was here there was construction being done (over half the space was barred off) and the price wasn’t adjusted accordingly. 2 dollars off isn’t exactly equatable. I’ll prolly be back though
Positive experience: Changing my review from 4 years ago from 5 stars to 3 stars. The place is constantly full and oversaturated. It doesn't matter what time you go, it will always be constantly full af. Cancelled subscription for this very reason. Or 1) the price should drop because of how full it is or 2) the price should be the same but limit the people they allow to enter.
Fantastic experience: Love it, great bouldering, great kids area, nice cafe. Route setters are very impressive great routes from lowest to higher grades.
Fantastic experience: Nice gym! Majority of problems seems slab by or overhang. Interesting route setting. Nice training area as well with the usual equipment (several hang boards Beast Master 1000 and 2000), weights, chinup bar etc. Staff were really friendly and accommodating! St
Fantastic experience: We visited this place and found the spacious gym lovely! The gym uses the colour of the holds to denote their difficulty, but I note that they are testing a new system to use numbers. The gym also has weights section and a cosy cafe to wind down after a session.
Fantastic experience: I’ve been a member here for a long time and it’s been perfect - much better than having a regular gym membership. Great place for casual climbing too with a good cafe for the chillers
Fantastic experience: Awesome climbing wall, plenty to at for every level and grades felt reasonable. Absolutely covers all wall angles, nice vibes, nice cafe and upstairs tables and couch area to rest and snack. Aside from the standard setting walls covered in other reviews, you also get a 2017 Moonboard (some holds could be tweaked and re-aligned), tons of fingerboards, slightly overhanging woodie, big circuit board and a well-equipped gym, oh and how could I forget those dairy-free chocolate peanut butter slices! difficult for a lactose intolerant person to get good snacks at a wall sometimes, that stuff was really next level, congrats! would definitely recommend a visit
Fantastic experience: Great space for indoor bouldering. Nice little Cafe to chill out at and friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit.
Fantastic experience: Uprising on 199 Ferry Road in Waltham, Christchurch (8011) provided a memorable experience for my first climbing adventure. The thrill of scaling the walls added an exciting dimension to the fun atmosphere of the venue. Looking forward to more climbing adventures there!
Negative experience: 20 minutes in decided to order a cider due to the various advertisements around the counter. Happily chatted to the fella (who was apparently new) while I ordered the cider whilst wearing my climbing shoes, then after two sips the Manager Zara came and told us we were no longer allowed to climb and that there was a sign stating so. The small A4 sized sign was actually around the corner out of sight from the counter. Zara was incredibly rude and difficult to deal with. It took alot of talking with her to get a refund which she said I had to email them about to get my money back. Pretty horrible experience. I have come a few times but won't be coming back. I live in Rangiora and drove 35 minutes to get here to only spend 20 minutes climbing. This experience was incredibly upsetting.
Hi Lockie, Our policy around not being able to climb after drinking is made clear throughout our waiver, our safety video and signage on the taps. This is for the safety of you and others, and is something any duty manager on our team will maintain. . We were able to resolve the refund for you via eftpos on the day, but I understand there was a brief delay whilst our DM established the best way to process the refund. We also refunded all of your friends via eftpos once they had decided they would also not be climbing. We of course want everyone to feel welcome and heard at Uprising, and pride ourselves upon the positive relationships our staff create with the community. I apologise if this was not what you experienced and would be happy to discuss that experience with you. I extend that invitation to any of your friends who also wish to discuss further. You can contact me directly via [email protected] or call the gym and ask for the General Manager if you wish to discuss further. Kind regards,
Fantastic experience: Enjoyed traditional-style boulder problems of slabs or highballs resembling the Castle Hill boulders. Overall, a great facility for fun climbs for all age groups. Addit : I'd appreciate more positive volumes on the slab walls - like in the recent settings - to make it less reachy and intimidating. The recent setting has been excellent and enjoyable, especially for shorter climbers. The holds are thoughtfully placed for shorter people, allowing for variations of creative moves.
Fantastic experience: Pretty big with really cool and fun routes, having small gym as well as bar and rest area. Very nice and helpful staff. So far the best boulder in NZ ✨
Fantastic experience: It is very pogchamp
Fantastic experience: Super salle!
Fantastic experience: Salle magnifique ! Super blocs, salle de fitness. Excellent banana bread
Thank you Camille. We're glad to learn that you enjoyed your time here!
Fantastic experience: Excellent bouldering wall with lovely staff
Fantastic experience: Great place to take the family. Lots of challenges.
Positive experience: Nice place to spend some time with family and great climbs
Fantastic experience: Great place, lots of different climbs for all levels that are regularly changing for constant new climbs.
Fantastic experience: Awesome and super helpful friendly as anything staff, walls are challenging with a great range of difficulties for all ages and skill levs
Fantastic experience: A great bouldering gym, clean, plenty of space and lots of boulder problems. Also a great cafe and seating to relax in and just watch. There is also a kids climbing area, gym and yoga!
Fantastic experience: Loved this place, went bouldering with my mate and his family there and loved it. Helpful staff, good rentals and really fun routes.
Positive experience: My husband and I like to visit local climbing gyms when we travel. There was a lot of buzz about this gym— we even overheard two dads talk about it when they ran into each other in the city center on the way to work! Anyway, the gym does look sleek with interesting wall features but it doesn't have AC, the setting was repetitive and not very interesting, there was a lot of underutilized space, and the grades were soft.
Hi Shirley,Good to hear you enjoyed the design. We are certainly having a very hot and humid summer in Christchurch, and AC would be a bonus. We would love some more feedback on the setting, especially around what additional movement styles and features you would have liked to see in the gym. Our setting team are always looking to develop new movement and create variety. Feel free to get in touch via email to discuss. Callum
Positive experience: BECAREFUL of losing your chalk bags, brushes and small accessories. Its a great place but i've noticed quite a bit of stealing around the area and inside the facility. Even with your name on the item, there is quite a bit of "missing" items if you leave it unattended, especially lately. Lost a chalk bag with my stuff inside. They managed to sort out the bike thief recently but just be careful. Otherwise the climbing there is a nice place. There are open cabinets for people to store their stuff but i prefer the lockers more.
Hi Chun, Thanks for the review, if you have not yet checked in with our team for lost property please do. We have hundreds of items left on the pads and in the cubbies every month that end up in our lost property. There has been a rise in crime in the local area and we do advise valuables to be stored securely and bikes to be locked with appropriate locks. It is important to note that this crime has not come from within the climbing community but from people known to police and we have been working with them to assist in prevention.
Fantastic experience: Great climbing place, they change up the climbs regularly and have plenty for beginners, as well as more experienced climbers. The staff are friendly too, and the cafe is well priced and has good food.
Negative experience: Came here with my partner twice while we were visiting NZ and wanted to check out the local gyms. The facility is nice -- the cafe/bar/pizza shop with seating on the second floor is a nice touch. Decent number of walls available, although it was very crowded and sometimes felt like there wasn't a safe amount of clearance space for people climbing. A handful of interesting problems up to V5 but honestly, most of them felt repetitive. You really just needed to know the same three moves to do a route, and there was definitely a strong bias for being tall. Also did not appreciate random onlookers just spraying beta at you. Not sure if this is just a difference in climbing culture, but we're used to people asking the climber first whether they want help with the beta. Moreover, the atmosphere was weirdly competitive and people were pretty closed off. We've climbed around the US, Canada, and Mexico, and haven't encountered such an unfriendly atmosphere before. Guess this place isn't our vibe.
Hey Mel,I am really sorry to hear your time at Uprising was not up to expectation. We certainly want people to feel welcome and enjoy all aspects of their visit. I would love to discuss your experience with you directly. We are always open to feedback and looking for ways to improve. You can reach us via phone, email and all the usual social channels. Please do get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you,Callum
Positive experience: Mint gym which is a OK size. Facility is well maintained and climbs changed fairly regularly. They also offer food, cafe, bar, yoga and a small gym onsight. Price is a little steep for the casual user and the 10 pass deal doesn't save you much money. Is almost always busy, unless you go in the morning on a weekday. Would be 5 star if it was bigger, as its so popular now they probably could afford to expand or build a second one to spread the members across.
Fantastic experience: This place is awesome. Very cool facility with an awesome vibe. Brought my autistic 9yo son here today after pre-arranging an intro session with the assistant manager, Todd. He had a fantastic time and Todd was excellent, very patient and very encouraging. He really took the time to explain the rules and make sure that my son fully understood his instructions. My son is dying to come back and I am considering a membership for myself too. Can't recommend them highly enough!!
Fantastic experience: Great space, full of interesting routes. I'd definitely get a membership if I lived here. The warmup/gym section looked well organised and the induction process was smooth. Staff were friendly and left you to it if you know what you're doing. Would love to check the yoga space out, and the dining area looked like a great space to do a bit of work too. Visited on a Friday early afternoon, so the car park was pretty full, but still managed to park my Transit, which is great to be able to do in a city!
Positive experience: Coming from overseas. Staff were friendly, routes were great. Not a bad experience at all, but everything is super grubby, everything, holds feel like they haven’t been cleaned for months, bathrooms were grubby, airflow needs a bit of TLC. Could use a step up for sure to bring it above average.
Thanks for the review, great to know you felt welcomed by the team and enjoyed the boulders! We absolutely agree the facility is looking a bit weathered at the moment, and we are working hard to get on top of that. The past few months have been the busiest since we opened in 2019. We have new industrial chalk eaters on the way from Europe, increased the services from our cleaning contractors and are working our way through some TLC to the paint work and bathrooms. Thanks for the feedback, and be assured we are onto it, ready for your next trip! Hope you enjoyed your stay in NZ. Callum
Fantastic experience: Lots of routes with varying levels from young kids to competitive climbers. A dedicated area for the under 5’s to climb in a safe environment and with slides - it looked very fun! Has a workout gym to aid their regular clientele. Friendly staff and a very clean environment. We will come bouldering here next time we’re in Christchurch. If they didn’t live in Auckland, I would also take my niece (2.5) and nephew (5) here to enjoy the kids area.
Fantastic experience: First time here, walking around to find a place to have some lunch, and here we are, outside 31 degrees inside sitting in cool breeze and air conditioning enjoying chicken pizza lunch, watching people bouldering, very friendly staff, will come back
Hello Donna, Thank you for your review. We are glad to learn that you enjoyed your time here. We hope to see you again sometime soon! All the best :)
Fantastic experience: Really really really would recommend it if you are looking for a proper climbing wall in NZ. I was recommended Uprising from a friend who had travelled to NZ from the UK like I am. They said it was the best wall in NZ and so far I would agree. The setting was varied and interesting, I can't speak for anything over v5/6c as I haven't climbed in 3 months but the effort made to keep the low grades entertaining was nice. There were a few low percentage moves above big holds/volumes which is never my favourite thing but I didn't feel unsafe. The staff member who greeted us was super friendly and let us know everything we needed too. The showers/toilets were nice too. All around a great wall. Will be back for sure.
Fantastic experience: So much fun! Early evening it was super busy, but around 08:30 it was a lot quieter. Really good climbing walls, with a nice diversity of levels. Car park isn’t big, so had to park on the road turning left.
Positive experience: Small space called Bloclands for the kids. Slides are cool but figure the area can get crowded pretty easily with only a few kids. Great place to get kids used to bouldering. Nearby Cafe serves pizza and coffee.
Fantastic experience: Very welcoming, get involved with friendly climbers, work together or work on your own. Staff are accommodating and friendly. Great coloured holds system, and creative ideas for mystery climbs or challenge climbs because of uprisings birthday.
Fantastic experience: Very nice climbing gym with all the amenities, plus the cafe smelled of delicious pizza. Was pretty busy but people were great at taking turns on the wall which gave you just enough rest for the next try. Still an epic location, lota of new climbs this time around.
Fantastic experience: Spacious gym with varying degrees of difficulty. $20 for a day pass, and that also gets you access to the weightlifting area. Different deal in the cafe every day. On Mondays, only $6 for smoothies. The green one is yum!
Hi Sam, Thank you for leaving us a review, we appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed your visit to Uprising. We look forward to seeing you again :)

Fantastic experience: Great place with great people and sometimes it even smells like pizza. Needs a size upgrade though
Fantastic experience: Go here all the time. Awesome staff, great route setting, and mean pizza. Would recommend for everyone.
Fantastic experience: Great hour afternoon or day. Staff are great ask and they can help you out. Food ok unless your having chips or pizza.
Fantastic experience: Epic bouldering gym. It's huge, can spend hours here (if you've the stamina). Then end your day with awesome food and drinks at the café upstairs. Friendly and welcoming staff.
Fantastic experience: Good place for some problem solving excerises. Love to go to there and climb!
Fantastic experience: Great place to take the family. Lots of challenges. Cafe on site if you need a bite to eat or drink. You don't need to book. Excellent Safety.
Fantastic experience: Great bouldering for all levels. Bring your kids, dedicated children area.

Fantastic experience: Love this place. The staff are helpful and friendly, the facilities are great, and the kids love blocland!
Fantastic experience: Awesome place to go bouldering! Large area and great covid availability checker on the website
Fantastic experience: All the classes i have attended have been great. Sensitive, kind teachers who provide beautiful balanced experiences of Yoga.
Fantastic experience: Great fun for the little man on the kids climbing area. Safe and good healthy activity, very friendly staff and reasonable pricing.
Fantastic experience: Attractive building. Very helpful friendly staff. Great variety of climbing routes. Affordable prices. Well done. They have put a lot of thought into it and it shows.
Positive experience: ORIGINAL REVIEW: 1 ⭐ I had my daughter and two nephews with me. One of my nephew's was under 5 so we needed to climb in blocklands. I asked the staff member if we could climb in the other area when the youngest wasn't climbing and she said yes as long as it was just the older two because there is a 1:2 ratio We moved into the larger area later and the same staff member approached us and told us we needed to go and pay more to be in there. I reminded her that I had specifically asked that question of her when we arrived, she said she misunderstood and we need to stay in blocklands or pay more. This is the second bad experience I have had so we will not be returning and will be passing on our experiences to other. --- UPDATE: 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Following this review, I received a phone call from the acting General Manager, who was very open to my feedback and took this constructively. I discussed my experience as a customer - in short I left feeling unsatisfied. I disagree with the saying "the customer is always right" however, I do believe that the customer should always leave feeling satisfied. Thank you for valuing customer feedback and providing a fantastic customer experience as a result! I will now be sharing the great experience I have had at Uprising. Thank you, again.
Fantastic experience: Only bouldering gym I have ever been to, however compared to others I see online this is clearly better than almost all of them. Super clear, awesome staff, nice cafe and solid training area, complete with general gym equipment. The thing that stands out to me the most is the layout. The room is open and has some cool central walls and overhangs, but the spacing between climbs is AMAZING compared to others I have seen on YouTube or instagram. 5 stars easy!
Fantastic experience: Great Boulder hall. They’re offering also great pizza.
Fantastic experience: Always awesome. Great atmosphere, kids love Blocland, energetic and helpful staff, good coffee, simple but delicious pizzas, and of course routes up all the walls with creative overhangs and interesting features everywhere along with gold-standard bouldering gym training boards. No heat and no AC so be prepared for a milder version of how hot or cold it is outside.
Fantastic experience: Love it, go here all the time. Great space. Awesome staff. Cool patrons. New problems are regularly set and updated weekly. Food is awesome and coffee is some of the best in Christchurch. 11/10
Fantastic experience: Blocland is an amazing place for little ones - definitely worth a visit! Stay for a coffee after too.
Fantastic experience: Stopped here for a tasty coffee and a smoothie and really enjoyed the drinks and atmosphere! Also watching people climb gearless in a safe environment with super padded floors made me consider doing it sometime which is interesting cause I generally hate rock climbing They offer cabinet food, pizza, fries, bottled juices and even beer later in the evening so something for everyone, highly recommend even just for a passing visit.
Fantastic experience: What a fabulous place! Few businesses provide an inspiring combination of exercise, social and therapeutic amenities as the food people at Uprising. I attended the Christchurch round of the National Indoor Bouldering Series (NIBS) this last Sunday and even though there was a lot of competitiveness everyone was having a super time. The Bouldering activities seem to provide the perfect mix of personal challenge and camaraderie. It was great to see everyone from preschoolers to grandparents on the walls having fun.
Fantastic experience: Great climbing, great staff and a great time.
Fantastic experience: Really great facilities
Fantastic experience: Just do it
Fantastic experience: Awesome place
Fantastic experience: Fun atmosphere, constantly challenging, helpful people and amazing staff
Positive experience: Big area to try different wall. Difficulty level dont have a big jump between colors
Fantastic experience: Great boulder gym, can't go wrong :)

Fantastic experience: Best bouldering gym in the country
Fantastic experience: Vast facility. Friendly staff and fellow climbers. Excellent pizza.

Fantastic experience: A wonderfully welcoming environment to explore my yoga practice in. I love the opportunities available for a very personalised practice.
Fantastic experience: Love it at Uprising! Fun and challenging climbs, great friendly staff, food and coffee and full of awesome vibes!
Fantastic experience: Once again I visited, and once again the the experience did not disappoint. Amazing environment and staff with amazing service and quality food and drink. Make this a priority visit.
Fantastic experience: I take my 7 year old there, staff really helpful and inclusive. Good coffee in the cafe too
Fantastic experience: There are so many great things about this place but I will just name a few...delicious food, the best walls in chch, friendly people, epic music, great gym.
Fantastic experience: I go there regularly and the staff are really nice and the climbing community is really friendly as well. I recommend.
