Fantastic experience: Wow. Easily the most modern brazilian jiu jitsu school in Whangarei! Super personalized, super realistic. No time wasting, no drama, just came in and trained. The training and the coaches advice was personalized to my individual needs and level. I felt like I instantly improved my understanding of an area I was struggling to understand with traditional teaching methods. If you want the highest quality, personalized jiu jitsu training look no further.

Fantastic experience: Just had an awesome Tai Chi training session at Whangarei BJJ. Am up here on holiday and messaged the team about trialling Tai Chi as have had little exposure and was curious. Didn't want to waste their time knowing I was going back home in a few days so mentioned it upfront,and yet I was encouraged to come along regardless and was just an awesome experience. Don't be fooled into thinking it's the Tai Chi you see of the old people in the park. This was practical and got to experience martial applications, with good explanations of why we were doing things in a relaxed fashion which allowed for questions and curiosity Was well worth the time,so give it a shot. I'm very please I took the gamble and walked through the door. Cheers team !

Fantastic experience: Great Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym in Whangarei, with a great level of BJJ across the board. I just rocked up from the UK on holiday and got to train with everyone at the open mat class. No egos, slow controlled finishes. These guys are doing it right!

Fantastic experience: I had a great time training with the members of Whangarei Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Tucked away in a cosy academy overlooking the street below, it is a great gym to train at. The environment was that of good comradirie and teamwork. Good cleanliness and hygiene routine after the training. Mats are clean and comfortable. Would train under professor James' teaching again.

Fantastic experience: Our whole family has trained under James at some stage. The kids classes are run really well building confidence and resilience. The adults classes are are just as good, guiding and training you to better yourself. James is professional and also very down to earth. You won’t find a better gym in Northland than WhangareiBJJ.

Fantastic experience: James is a really good instructor, explaining things in a clear and easy to follow way for a beginner like me but clearly possesses enough technical knowledge to keep the more experienced practitioners engaged and challenged. The other students are all super welcoming. Everyone mixes with everyone, and there’s no sense that people can’t be bothered with you because you’re a newbie, which is great for helping me learn. A really good vibe to the place, which is due to James’ approach and attitude. I’ve been going about a month now and will definitely continue!

Fantastic experience: One of the best decisions we made for our son was to sign him up with Professor James at Whangarei BJJ 5 years ago. If you're looking for a real sport for your child with an amazing coach and awesome vibes, then this is your place. Real training without the BS, but heaps of fun too. James pours his heart into the team and you see the results. I can't recommend Whangarei BJJ enough and we absolutely love James and his fantastic style. 5 stars is too little!

It's not something you can learn in a month or two, but anyone with a mindset to learn from their mistakes can do it. Positive experience: Tena koe, ko lee Kaire toku ingoa. I have trained under Professor James cherie at Mybjj HQ port rd for 3yrs. I enjoy Jujitsu for the physical well being and mental training. I've come from rugby and still seek a physical workout with low impact damage , and jitz provides a good balance of the physical with mental and an endless amount of learning and understanding . I find the adult classes have got a great bunch of men and women of a martial art where the egos are left at the door. I love jujitsu ,I would encourage anyone Male/female give it go. If you dont go you will never know.

Our girls have grown in confidence in many areas since starting. James Cherrie is an amazing instructor and a great person to be a mentor to our children.

Fantastic experience: I started training Jiu Jitsu with James, thanks to Matias and Wiltz, in September of 2012 on Okinawa Japan while stationed at Kadena Air Base. Starting Jiu Jitsu has been one of the best decision I’ve made in my life. Learning from James was awesome! He is really knowledgeable on both self defense and sport Jiu Jitsu. Although I haven’t trained with him in years I still keep in contact with him when I need help with my game. I hope to get over to New Zealand in 2020 to train at Whangarei BJJ, the best gym in New Zealand! I’d recommend James’s gym to anyone wanting to get in grappling.
