Whether you want to go for a leisurely swim, race against the clock, take swimming lessons, join an aqua group fitness class or work out in our fitness centre, we’ve got the activity for you. There’s a sauna and a steam room for those more relaxed days, too.
Beyond swimming, this pool is ideal for walking lengths or rehabbing. It's great for customers with different abilities and confidence levels. The pool is accessible by hoist.
Young people across Auckland have free access to all council-owned pools. This initiative, for Aucklanders aged 16 years and under, means more of our region’s children and young people can be fit, healthy, and waterwise.*

Our facility accommodates family members of all ages. We have a shallower, warmer learn to swim pool and a bigger pool for deep water confidence and greater distance.
Here at Takapuna Learn to Swim, we are beginning our journey towards a more inclusive centre. We are working to ensure that our staff are considering the individual needs of students and are learning how to modify their practices to cater to more young people with disabilities or impairments. Our team are happy to talk about how we can create a better opportunity and experience for your child.
Term 1: Tuesday 30 January - Sunday 14 AprilTerm 2: Monday 29 April - Sunday 7 JulyTerm 3: Monday 22 July - Sunday 29 SeptemberTerm 4: Monday 14 October - Friday 20 December
Youth classes are designed for older children who haven’t been learning for long, or who would benefit from extra development before they progress to adult classes.
Some of our Learn to Swim schools offer a squad beyond Stroke for children who want to continue swimming to keep their fitness up, independently of a swimming club.
If you have had lessons before or time has lapsed since your last lesson, we recommend you get an assessment. An assessment can be booked through the link below.
If you know what class to enrol in, come into the centre and have a chat with our friendly staff at reception or sign up online using the button below.
Our Learn to Swim intensive lessons run over five consecutive half days (four if there is a public holiday) from Monday to Friday. Lessons may be in the morning or the afternoon.
If your child is a bit stuck on an element of their swimming, by coming every day for five days they'll normally crack it. Conquer that learning to breathe, breaststroke, or butterfly!
Contact us using the details on this page, or talk to the Learn to Swim team at the centre. A free assessment may be required to determine your child's level.
Children 16 years and under are not permitted to use the sauna. The sauna is not wheelchair accessible. Please use a towel or mat to sit on at all times.
Exit immediately if you are uncomfortable, dizzy, or sleepy and seek the assistance of staff. Even if you have no existing health conditions, excessive time spent in the spa, sauna, and steam room could be fatal.
We know that everyone's needs are different. When you become a member, in consultation with you we tailor a support programme to best serve you in getting (fit and) active your way.

Takapuna Pool and Leisure Centre: Opinions
Fantastic experience: All staff very friendly and understanding as are the people happy place to be I enjoy coming.
Negative experience: 항상 주차요원이 돌아다니면서 벌금을 부과하러 다닌다
Negative experience: staff member of the centre did not answer call, there should be someone in reception area??
Fantastic experience: Love swimming here as the staff including life-guards are always friendly, approachable, and extremely helpful - even lending me a pair of goggles one time when I forgot mine. They have extractor fans running which is good for ventilation. Big thumbs up from me.
Negative experience: For kids lesson please do not put. They didn’t teach well. Just watch the clock and let them play freely
Fantastic experience: Great little kids pool with decent size family changing rooms. Fits pram which is handy when you have two kids to wrangle.
Positive experience: Steam room not properly working since last opening after maintenance works, its cold and barely have any steam in there can’t compare how it was before. Very nice and hot steam room was one of the best things in this leisure center but not anymore. I am not the only one who is not happy with it. Really hope it will be fixed soon.
Positive experience: Decent pool, main pool is a little bit cold but good if you are a swimmer.
Negative experience: It's 8 dollars per person, and there's NO spa. The gym is not included, and if you wanna use the gym, there would be an extra charge. Get's too busy over the weekends.
Fantastic experience: I’ve been coming for the last month. Between 3 and 4 is always quite quiet. Nice pool
Negative experience: I go here at 4:30 pm on Sunday (not public holidays), but the pool closed without any updates. The website says they will close at 6:00pm. Who can explain this!? Waste of my time to be here.
Positive experience: Great neighbourhood pool. We go 4-5 times a week for Aquafit. The pool is big and clean. The Instructors are all great and the pool staff are always friendly and welcoming. Grateful to have this local resource! The only negative is that there is seriously not enough ventilation in that main pool area. They really need to crack open some windows and get some MORE FRESH AIR in! Please and thanks.
Positive experience: Was quite apprehensive to try out the pool as reviews were so negative. Braced myself for the worst but actually staff at front desk were efficient and polite, the swimming pool was clean and certainly not cold as others have suggested. Same for changing rooms, clean and tidy. This is obviously a public space so does not compare to more luxurious and private versions, but was enjoyable enough that I will return there, hopefully frequently
Negative experience: Have a year membership that can hardly be used because of “staff shortages”. Each week and some times multiple occasions you receive messages via email or Facebook stating the pools will be closed due to staff shortages. This has been going on for month and months. It’s extremely unfair to people who pay weekly, monthly or in my case yearly to not get full use of the pool. There are constant heating issues and other problems with the facility. They give the option to go glenfield when closed, but how is this fair or just? Fire the management and get enough staff to honour the hours you state you are open.
Negative experience: I am writing this email to claim about your safeguard Ave at Takapuna centre. Today, my son had visited your Takapuna centre to swim. From the beginning, we did not receive any notice about the closing kids pool today. So, my son should have swim at Fun lane. (His is 120cm tall, and he knows how to keep his safety in this lane). Also him even wore a tube on his belly for safety and swam in that lane. All of sudden, one of your safeguard called Ave, came to us and start talking about the safety. He said my son looked not safe because he kept putting his head into the water. How come we can swim without putting head into the water? Can you explain this? Even there was another boy who kept trying to dive into the water and he didn't point out that thing. He looked more not safe than our boy. And he, Ave literally kicked us out. Ave, he did not give us any warning or instruction before he had done that to us. How come it is possible? We have been using this centre more than two years and my son also is taking a swimming class on Thursday . Recently, your swimming class also has been cancelled all of sudden just like before two hours ago for two weeks. That was horrible experience to us and your centre is making us disappointed. We are very disappointed to this happen and Ethan got upset as well. We want to get his apology .
Positive experience: Used to be a good place to do lane swimming, unfortunately since the beginning of 2023, they started closing three lanes for swimming lessons. That effectively leaves only one lane for doing laps (the other lane is a slow lane and is used by people that can hardly swim). It's a real shame they are neglecting their regular swimmers like that. We pay full price subscription but can rarely use the pool for swimming when coming after work.
Negative experience: Again, I regret I didn't check the Google review before I came to here, but who thought should check review for a swimming pool? Yes, indeed the pool is very cold, the reception lady too. I gave two stars because none of these is intentional.
Positive experience: A nice indoor pool with a gym and clean changing rooms. There is also a shallow pool for kids with a seating area. There are also saunas and seating on the side of the pools. They also give good swimming lessons both for beginners and advances swimmers. Entrance fees are cheap as well.
Negative experience: The Large pool is too cold! My child is shivering after their half hour swimming lesson. Warm water is then wasted in the shower, as it's a battle getting them out as they are wanting to spend longer in the shower to warm up.
Positive experience: Mixed feelings with this place, the pool and leisure activities itself was good. However, there was a time when my sister asked to borrow goggles from the customer service desk and they said no but I recalled them saying yes to another person who is in fact white. We were wondering if she is being treated differently because she is Asian or the person working at the time was just rude!
Positive experience: The staff are friendly, the lifeguards are professional. 5 star for the lifeguards. The facility however is in need of an upgrade, pretty much no gym, no indoor hot pool and the sauna is not hot at all. Facility needs an upgrade.
Fantastic experience: I take my 3 year old here for swimming lessons, and they are absolutely amazing! Her instructor Sara is the best! She’s a great teacher, and runs really great quality and fun lessons that my daughter loves. She’s also progressing really well in her swimming, it amazing to watch! The ratio is 1 teacher to 3 kids, which is much better, and cheaper than a lot of the more costly private lessons. I can even swim with my 1 year old in the other half of the pool while my 3 year old has her lesson. Highly recommend!
Positive experience: Nice quiet place to swim, showers and sauna are nice. Handy location.
Fantastic experience: Great learn to swim lessons. Friendly staff members and great facilities. I had a wonderful time swimming here.
Fantastic experience: Great pool, the best on the Shore, and the 33.3m length is perfect.
Positive experience: Takapuna Pools have clean Men's changing rooms, and generally the place is well organised. Just wish they would stay open a bit later during the week to cater for people who work later hours ;)
Fantastic experience: Went here with my 8 month old daughter. It was great, she is free and I’m only a dollar. Beautiful clean facilities and the children’s pool was great. It had floats so she could play around on them. The receptionist was so lovely and helpful, pre warned me about the kids lessons at 4pm. Really lovely pool, will be back. Thanks guys!
Negative experience: The pools are ok but pretty disappointing to see the local pools are barely cleaned and regulated, especially the bathrooms and saunas. The mens bathroom can be vile, as the toilets seem as if they are cleaned once a week and the saunas can be overcrowded with a select few individuals who ruin the experience for others through singing and talking way too loud.
Positive experience: the only problem with it is that the water is a little cold.
Fantastic experience: This is where all the kids learnt to put their heads under water . Very nice pool .
Positive experience: Nice pool but very crowded
Positive experience: Closed off for COVID as expected, but now at level 2 other pools are open, but Takapuna still closed with no word of when they will re open Final complaint is smelly disinfectant used on pool side during swim hours. Health cautions have been raised about inhaling disinfectants under strenuous exercise in enclosed places. Staff generally friendly and helpful. Well located much needed facility.
Fantastic experience: Wonderful local pool and gym facility
Negative experience: It's the worst pool which I came.
Fantastic experience: Great facility!
Negative experience: Why don't the managers get the dumb water walkers out of the swimming lanes??? The lifeguards don't seem to do anything!!
Positive experience: Had a great swim with my baby boy. Was a little busy but was to be expected.
Positive experience: 33 metre pool and small but functional gym
Positive experience: It's a pool, not to much more to say about it. Generally crowded but still usable. Very average rating for a very average place.
Negative experience: A few years since I came here to do lengths. I was there 10am on a Friday morning. Good things...not crowded so room to swim and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Not so good things....it’s looks run down. The area leading to the entrance is overgrown with tall weeds. I swam through a few pieces of tissue paper or similar...offputting. I paid for a spa and remembered it as a large pool. It is now a smaller tub...would fit about 8. Only 1 side of jets were working. The water from shower cubicles next door flooded through my shower area...there was a drain against the wall but the water wasn’t channeling down it. I had to ask a person to please not blow their nose into their hands and wash it all off in the pool water.
Positive experience: Clean, mildly unhelpful staff unless you're drowning I guess. Shoebox sauna and steam room usually overcrowded. Spa is an appalling joke. Use pool to do lengths 33 1/3 m. Shower pressure low and temperature set low . Pool chopped up into 6 lanes 3 usually unavailable. Good for mums dad's and kids. Has kids pool for lessons. Swimming aerobics. Overpriced.
Fantastic experience: Amazing place with all picnic facilities
Positive experience: I went to here yesterday, but it was closed. Please go later January 22.
Negative experience: Aqua fit classes v.crowded & the times of most classes (10.30-11.30) only suitable for the retired. With no apparent limits on class sizes, full of the aged & infirm elderly along for a natter standing in the water; hence pool extremely crowded, making it difficult to have a good workout. If you want a serious work out look for a pool with (lower) limits on numbers- i.e most other pools. Changing rooms/showers + other facilities old & grungy......
Positive experience: Good pools! Great value if you just wanna pop in for a swim or spa. Spa pool seats 6-7 people max! Probably not large enough give the amount of people visiting during a normal weekday.
Negative experience: Went just to use spa facilities. Spa is quite small, could fit around 7 to 8 people tops and it was freezing! I run quite hot and generally struggle with warmer spas but this was ridiculous. Very tepid. The price however was very cheap. Just wish they would up the temperature during winter.
Negative experience: Used the long pool yesterday for the first time and noticed that very few people shower before entering the pool. Water was dirty with quite a few plasters, plastic and other human residues floating around. There's seems to be no following of the lane signs with people doing all sorts of things in swimming lanes making harder for continuous swimmers to complete their workout without stopping or constantly trying to avoid others. 2 lanes devoted to acqua gym (over crowded) and 2 lanes devoted to people walking or standing around. This leaves only 3 lanes for swimmers. Not an ideal place for swimming workout. I normally use Glenfield or Birkenhead which are much cleaner and more suitable.
Negative experience: Overcrowded, hardly any swim lanes available. Signs in Chinese telling people not to spit!
Positive experience: Good and clean and extremely reasonably priced. This is a great asset to the local community.
Positive experience: The pool is really good. Dry sauna top class. Unfortunately minus two stars for cleanliness of wet sauna and bathrooms. Plus one star for price though!
Positive experience: My Wife and I went for a swim today 24th Decenber at 3pm but it was closed. The web site said it is open till 6pm - maybe it needs to be updated more often. Anyway, a very good Christmas to the wonderful staff there. Roger
Positive experience: It will be more HYGIENIC and SAVE CHEMICALS and FILTRATION COSTS if people showered before entering the pool, especially those who jump in with sweat dripping after using the steam room or spa. As the day progresses you can taste more and more salt from sweat. Other than these, great facilities and great staff.
Positive experience: Need to Keep your eyes on kids under 5. Spa pool is a bit small.
Positive experience: My family love it. Although bathroom needs constant cleaning
Positive experience: A nice spa outdoor with a lake view. The pool is not so deep, suitable for families, crystal clear water. But gym equipment is old style, dislike.
Negative experience: Didnt enjoy it at all, spa pool is the size of a residential one with 15 people and not even working, and they are charging extra for this service. I recommend to look for another place
