The Kung Fu School - Mt Eden

Fantastic experience: I have been training at Mt Eden for many years now. I had trained previously as a teenager back in Palmy and was nervous about returning many, many years later - am I too old now? Am I too unfit? Turns out I needn't have worried, everyone is very welcoming, the instructor is great, techniques are well explained and classes are good fun. Kung Fu is now a huge part of my life, it has pushed me to better myself physically and mentally, and much of what I have learned has improved my personal life in many ways. I highly recommend coming along for a trial class!

Fantastic experience: My son has been at the club for a year and a half and it's obvious how much he's getting out of it. After about half a year of sitting on the sidelines I realised that everything he was getting out of Kung Fu was also available to me too, so I joined. It's been fantastic. Kung Fu feels like quite a "deep" martial art, not just with striking but also locks, holds, ground work. There is also a mental and spiritual dimension. Good for fitness and flexibility, it's a great community and the instructors are friendly and knowledgeable (but do apply positive discipline when required). The club also seems very friendly to women and girls, and women and girls are represented at every level, all the way to black belt. I am loving my Kung Fu journey and so is my son. If you are thinking of sending your kid here, do it, but also consider whether you might want to join!

Fantastic experience: Before signing up I was worried about (1) being a bit too old with no martial arts experience and (2) what the learning culture would be like. I joined for a taster session and was really impressed by how welcoming the group was, so I decided I definitely wanted to continue and have now been going for the last ~3 months. The instructors are patient and truly excellent teachers; they explain in simple and precise terms how to improve your form (so you can progress more rapidly than you might imagine!). You train together 'as a family' so the white belts get to learn a broad range of techniques straight away, right alongside the more experienced people, who are also really supportive and give advice as you go. If you are tentative about starting, I thoroughly recommend signing up for a taster session so you can try it out for yourself :)

Fantastic experience: I’ve had the pleasure of training at the Mt. Eden Kung Fu school for several years. I love the atmosphere at the school as well as the diversity and variety of students that attend it. Throughout my years training, I’ve been challenged and surpassed my limits both physically and mentally. I’ve sadly moved away from the area, but I’m happy that I can call this school my home base for whenever I come back!

The instructors are so much fun and incredibly devoted - along with all the seniors who love to make you feel at home and help you out. Came from a background of absolutely no martial arts and it's become a huge part of my life. Couldn't recommend enough.
