Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Love this place can do all sorts of stuff
Positive experience: Just went here to shower $5 quite clean
Fantastic experience: It has a few different pools for different functions, national games are usually held in the large pool including water polo, kayak polo and so on. They also offer swim classes for kids and adults. There's a sauna and spa too. The baby pool is separated from the toddler and kids pool. Ample carpark at the back with a smaller carpark at the front entrance. It is located right next to the library.
Negative experience: I enjoying coming to the facility and use the gym in addition to the pool. I unfortunately have to say that the facility isn't cleaned properly. The pool is filthy, it really needs a clean and the changing rooms...... they are not maintained. I would expect this as a minimum with the price increases. The gym is clean and maintained well though!
Fantastic experience: I love this pool as it one of the biggest pools in Wellington.
Fantastic experience: Plenty of Staff available for help, great facility, a hydroslide would be awesome
Positive experience: Great pool, enjoy the facilities, the hydro pool and classes are good and it has everything you need
Fantastic experience: Shower - $5 for hot and large private room with plug for hairdryer. close to free camping site as well!
Fantastic experience: I go 2-3 times somedays. It’s such a nice place with great ocean views and lovely Staff
Fantastic experience: Great pool facilities . A great kids pool with lots of water play and little ones too they have there own separate area . Therapeutic pools for those aches and pains. Lane pools also for those dedicated swimmers ♀️ and a seperate gym facility that is upstairs separate that overlooks the pool.
Negative experience: Another long weekend and the public are being told to swim elsewhere. Why is underwater hockey taking over the pool? Why do they swarm public lanes with large fins? Extremely dangerous. Kudos for a lifeguard who stopped a bunch of UWH players about to train in a general area full of children. If you want to go for a weekend swim check the timetable. If you're unable to, it's best to avoid this place.
Fantastic experience: Big arena with multiple pools suitable for all ages and family. Coaches and guards are around for the safety of the swimmers. Diving and jumping stages are also available here. Bus stop right in front of the centre. Next to Kilbirnie park.
Fantastic experience: Great public service, only problem is it's sometimes quite busy from all the people enjoying it
Positive experience: Great play area when the splash pad is working
Negative experience: Ah yes, WRAC. The only pool where your aren’t allowed to go fast in the fast lane.
Fantastic experience: Impressive. The best place in town. Very friendly staff. Very neat n clean facility.
Negative experience: Unfortunately, the swimming pool in capital of New Zealand is not good as I expected. Double charge for Swimming and Sauna/hot pools, and weird facility design, very far distance between swimming pool and sauna, huge space change room but a few shower rooms. And so many groups occupy the lanes, do people still have space to use?
Positive experience: Sehr dreckiges aber großes Schwimmbad welches dringend auf die hygienische Gesundheitsgefährdung achten muss.
Positive experience: Average place for swimming, it can be made professional by WCC
Positive experience: Many pools, nice date scone from the Cafe.
Fantastic experience: A wonderful facility for children which should be treasured. Nothing quite like it in our part of the UK. And free too!
Fantastic experience: Great recreational indoor pools. Amenities were clean which is not the case for many indoor aquatic centres. Staff are very approachable and helpful.
Fantastic experience: Just went there to take a hot shower (free camping nearby) and it was nice - mention that you only want a shower and it’s only $3.20
Fantastic experience: Toddlers will love it They have heated pool for kids upto 2 years My son loves it
Negative experience: I had been going for a bout a month, but recently had a really bad and rude experience with the older man at the front desk, felt very uneasy after that interaction, will share more if you have an email I can message privately
Fantastic experience: Good kids pool. Warm and clean
Fantastic experience: Very excited to take my kid over there because they are excellent
Fantastic experience: Attended the pool yesterday for haven’t done so for 30+ years our grandson n daughter enjoyed it.
Fantastic experience: Great place to bring the kids
Fantastic experience: I swim in the hydrotherapy pool with my group. The water is always warm and interestingly, it has a bit of a current. I always enjoy my swim. The pool staff happily let us use noodles and swim jackets if we wish and will get them out if they have been put away. The staff are always polite and courteous. One time a swimmer from another part of the complex started banging on our doors as we were getting changed. The staff escorted him back and apologized saying it would never happen again. It never has. The thing that this pool has that I love is it has a clock with the correct time on the wall. Its high so everyone can clearly see the time. Its handy since our group hires the pool for a certain time period.
Negative experience: Very disappointed. Several areas were gated off. The women toilets were absolutely filthy. 2 were gated off so you had to use the disabled and there was poop on the floor. We wanted the hydrotherapy pool and this was gated off. Parking is also scarce. Won't be going back.
Negative experience: The diving boards/ platforms are never open are never open if you want to dive don't come here and the cafe is very over priced and the employees are grumpy
Positive experience: I choked on a bandaid and my bag got fanum taxed but the nuggies were fire and it was cheap
Positive experience: Prices were low and the pools are nice although I stubbed my toe 6 times and my bag wasn't there when I got back
Fantastic experience: Great baby toddler pool water to their tummy and a connecting pool to a bigger one with warm temperatures in the water for both pools. Then you have a diving board pool connecting to 2 other parts of the pool. Plus sauna spa and gym
Positive experience: Attended kids birthday party. Enjoyed the space and fun amenities that are fixed in the kids pool my 1 and a half year old boy really enjoyed playing with his nephews, nieces and friends. The temperature was great so that the kids wouldn't be cold when they hop off and a good space for the adults to sit down and chill here and there. 4 out of 5 would go again.
Negative experience: I have been going to this sauna for 4 months never had trouble. Today i accidently went into swimming pools and one of the employees came to me and said you are not suppose to be here in a very aggressive way and started shouting go back to the sauna and you get what you paid for. Honestly i had no idea he could just said go back please and be nice and i would have no problem. When i went to the sauna he again came back very aggressively saying you suppose to have towel underneath you while no one had in the sauna but again i had no problem if u just say nicely. Very bad customer service.
Positive experience: My son and his cousins enjoyed their time here. It is definitely a great place for kids to have fun. However I was very disappointed and offended when I was approached by a life guard (on behalf of his supervisor) saying that I was not allowed to video record my son playing in the pool as it was causing issues for other parents. So they say, but yet there were many other parents with their phones out video recording their children. Why was I the only issue?? I must say that it felt very discriminating.
Fantastic experience: Excellent aqua jogging pool. Changing rooms always have space. Lifeguards mostly friendly
Fantastic experience: The child loved it, I loved it, we loved it. Just want some diving board action like when we were kids
Positive experience: Good parking. Nice tidy changing rooms. Cafe at entrance, good for a caffeine fix afterwards
Fantastic experience: Great place! Swimming pool, hot pool, sauna, gym.. everything is here! Lovely staff.
Positive experience: Had our kids birthday here, was great except way over priced food, I'm talking crazy, and you have to clean up after the party.
Positive experience: Entree volwassene 6,80. Alleen douchen 3.
Fantastic experience: Super. Sprcha stojí 3,2 milý personál. Sprchy majú dvere.
Fantastic experience: Gyermekkorát. A legkisebbektől a felnőttekig mindenki megtalálhatja a magánakvaló medencét.
Fantastic experience: Great facility. More car parks would help
Fantastic experience: Excellent Aquatic Centre ... great facilities managed by wonderful staff !!
Fantastic experience: Great facilities for families and adult swimmers. It can get very crowded at peak times though.
Negative experience: Staff are very rude, feel racist to me but sorry to say that. Facility isn't clean and water is freezing cold.
Kia ora. We are very sorry to hear about your experience and we would like to find out more about what has happened, and how we can remedy it. If you could please [email protected] with specific details. Thank you. ^Kyra
Fantastic experience: Great pool and facilities. Very good staff, very friendly and accommodating.
Positive experience: Great when open to 50M length... Which unfortunately it's only 3 early mornings a week.... pretty lame considering it's Wellington's only 50m) Olympic pool. But fantastic pool and other pool facilities good. Unfortunately the current cafe situation is sub-par, generally understaffed, strange tables, bad chairs and minimal food options. Seems the new operators are AWOL or don't care.
Kia ora, thanks for your feedback regarding the 50m lanes. We absolutely understand the demand for 50m space, unfortunately, when the pool is set as a 50m configuration it restricts space and services to the community and public. We try to offer a few days a week where people can experience and train in that setup. Regarding the café, we are currently working with the new owner of the café and will pass on your feedback for them to consider. ^Kyra
Fantastic experience: I am New to fitness, and I have found my happy place POOL! Don't like gym... But it is important that I keep moving, hydro motion, and aqua exercise is my vice... And with membership opens up to other venues within Wellington and Porirua.
Fantastic experience: Started physio in the hydrotherapy pools. Amazing!! You can collect a sheet with recommended activites to help strengthen your core and help with your mobility. Equipment is there for you to use and wish i had startrd this years ago!! They need more changing rooms.
Fantastic experience: Such an amazing facility with lovely staff! I tried the hydrotherapy pool for the first time so was understandably unsure how it all worked so I approached the young lifeguard on duty for assistance. She was extremely helpful and immediately explained how everything worked and showed me where to get the necessary equipment and even gathered some exercise cards for me to use! Thank you lifeguard Molly for being so patient and professional with me. I also observed as Molly greeted everyone with a big smile as they walked into the pool. Sometimes it's the little things that can make someones week. These lifeguards were trained right!
Negative experience: The cafe just denied me using a keep cup - they insist on using polluting single use cups. The woman in charge was quite rude when speaking to me about it. Not sure what her deal is but avoid if u are even slightly concerned about the environment.
Fantastic experience: I haven’t been come here in almost 25 years, but I used come here in my younger years, I had so much fun it’s a awesome place, I remember the all staff been super friendly and it was cheap to get in.
Negative experience: Good facilities, however no one is paying attention to what's happening in the lanes: children without supervision in fast lanes, where are their parents and why are they not in the children's zone? Really could have hurt myself badly when I bumped into a child just standing there in the middle of the lane. Talked to supervisor, all they said "yes, understand it".
Kia ora Ekaterina. We are very sorry to hear about your experience and we would like to find out more about what has happened, and how we can remedy it. If you could please email the facility manager at [email protected] with specific details. Thank you!
Fantastic experience: Love the facility! Definitely 5 star. The only thing i would change is turning one of the 3 hot spas into a ice cold plunge pool! I think that move might bump you above freyberg
Fantastic experience: Amazing, huge facility of pools, sauna and hot spa. Not too much chlorine, clean, friendly staff, good value. Sure wish we had this near me in the UK.
Positive experience: Felt like a sweaty gorl in the hot pools which is exactly what I was I was going for, absolutely gorgeous!! Was there a bandaide in the drain? Yes! But I can over look that tbh. Changing rooms are very spacious and quite clean
Fantastic experience: Great selection of pools. The one for small kids is great, I've been the many times when my daughter when she was young and had really good times. Hydropool is perfect for the leisurely exercise without lane swimming. I found the staff to be very nice and helpful.
Fantastic experience: I am surprised to hear that "the older lady" at Reception was rude. Obviously this person knows her as she mentioned "24 years of service, which would not be common knowledge to the general public." Everyone has a bad day occasionally but I have never heard her be rude to any customers. I have always found her friendly, and helpful and I know that she is well liked by a lot of us.
Positive experience: I’ve only been here once (just to be clear, as I can’t comment to what it’s like usually). Firstly, parking is minimal - be warned! The main pool was pretty big, there was a ‘medium’ sized pool for families which looked worryingly like a shrimp soup - heavy on the shrimp (ie, very full of people). Then there’s a toddler pool which is pretty big compared to most pools. There’s another room with three spa pools, and a sauna. It’s suffocating in there and if you’re mildly claustrophobic- don’t even try. The spa pools are tiny rectangles. I’m not sure what the maximum capacity is for them but anything more than three gets pretty intimate. It looks like a pool that’s probably great for locals, great for water sports (like water volley ball - if that’s a thing, they cut the big pool in half). But it really isn’t for the ‘out of towners.’ The minimum parking, it’s out toward the airport and if you’re in rush hour traffic it’s an absolute nightmare to move around. There is a cafe on sight. I didn’t use it so can’t comment on pricing etc
Positive experience: SPA review: not really that nice area just by the reception. All three pools are same temperature and way too hot, over 40 degrees. You can stay max 5min and it gets too hot. Sauna is super dry and wrongly built, can't pour water on the stones. Only one sauna working, only one shower. Not a really nice place.
Kia ora Kamil, the spa pools at WRAC are set between 36-38 degrees and the temperature is constantly monitored. Our saunas are currently under maintenance and we look forward to having both saunas open soon. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for more information on this. Ngā mihi, ^Kyra
Positive experience: In all the years of coming to the Aquatic Centre to the Hydro Motion classes and also the public sessions I have always found the reception staff very welcoming. As someone who has been in the 'front line' dealing with the public it is not always easy. Not once have I heard or seen any staff either lifeguards, club active staff or reception staff be rude or unwelcoming. I think they all do a great job.
Fantastic experience: What a great facility for the kids and family! The splash pad is awesome and the toddler pool was great! All the changing facilities including the family changing rooms were clean. The pools were very clean. We only paid $1.70 for a 5 year old, two 4-year olds, a 3 year old and 4 supervising adults! Super great value for nearly 3 hours of fun. Highly recommend this pool and wish we have a facility as nice as this in Auckland!
Positive experience: This review is for lap swimming. The pool itself is large, with numerous lanes and a great temperature. In the mornings before noon, it’s generally pretty quiet and you usually have a lane to yourself. The other swimmers and staff are friendly and respectful. Docking one star because the pool isn’t the cleanest and there was a LOT of debris on the bottom of the pool every time I went. Hopefully management could work on that, because otherwise it would be the perfect place to swim. There are cubbies by the pool to store your things, including some lockers that can be used if you bring your own padlock. Also, if you’re just visiting for a short time, it may be cheaper to get a weekly pass to the gym in the building (which includes access to the pool) rather than purchasing daily pool passes. Just ask them about it at the front desk. Overall, great place to swim in Wellington. Highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Nice friendly staff and many kind of pool are here. Sauna and spa pool, Gym are here too.
Fantastic experience: Awesome to still have a facility that lets people jump off diving boards. Staff make you feel welcome and safe, but aren’t yelling at people every 5 seconds.
Positive experience: Lacks some features like wave pool or hydroslides but is very well patrolled, is really cheap so is great for taking your little ones there. Has 2 large pools for adults. Diving board etc and cafe. Not a bad place to spend a couple hours with the kids
Fantastic experience: Kilburnie pools awesome for the kids
Fantastic experience: Amazing pool, you can do anything water related in there
Positive experience: Fine establishment, warm staff and nice environment. Particularly enjoy the natural light.
Fantastic experience: Super facilities, friendly and helpful staff, lots going on. A great community centre.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic facilities for everyone. They also have a great swimming lesson team.
Fantastic experience: We stoped by for a quick shower as we travelling. Alice was very friendly and the centre is really cool.
Positive experience: The sauna was closed along with the large diving boards (that we came for). But the main pool and spa was ok.
Fantastic experience: Spas are really good here, good jets, good temperatures & away from the crowd and have 2 separate Saunas (1 for men & 1 for Women) Staff also very friendly here :)
Fantastic experience: Took a shower there ($3pp) as we stayed in the freedom camp nearby. Friendly staff and nice cafe cafe too!
Fantastic experience: A great complex, always clean and inviting ... and Mitch is wonderful ♀️ The Kilbirnie Cafe, in the Aquatic Centre, is superb ... the best cheese scones ever
Fantastic experience: Clean, great spectator seating, good having cafe on site too, areas for all types of swimming. Always an area to swim, even when the swim club is training. Please leave me a up below if you like my description.
Negative experience: Old woman at the reception was very rude, while the young lady was nice , we came for our baby’s first trip but unfortunately the baby area was closed without informing us by the reception. Showers in the family area was dirty.
Kia ora Sam, thank you for your feedback, we are sorry to hear about your experience. At times maintenance issues do come up, although unfortunate this is unavoidable and we need to prioritise the health and safety of our customers which sometimes means closing a pool at short notice. Before visiting the facility, we would recommended checking out the timetable on our website and following us on Facebook for the latest updates to ensure the pools you wish to use are open. We will pass on your feedback to the team regarding the cleanliness of the facility, again we do apologise for this.
Positive experience: Women on reception are rude (the guy is always friendly and helpful). Hydrotherapy pool is warm but regularly has recreational swimmers / couples using it like a spa so limited space for those who use it for rehabilitation.
Negative experience: Best swimming facilities in town. Unfortunately the staff management are quite rude, our group had a very difficult and ongoing lane booking experience. Very busy with teams and hardly any space available for individual public swimmers. Not very friendly folks, downright unhelpful actually but still the best option in town.
Kia ora Lauren, thank you for your feedback. We have high demand for pool space in our facility and we tried our best to accommodate your group booking. We are sorry that what was available didn’t work out for your group. We aim to have a minimum of three lanes available to the public, if any of you of your group wish to continue swimming. Ngā mihi ^Trish.
Fantastic experience: Most amazing staff. Special kind regards to Ravi, Hands down some of the best customer service in the country! Would recommend visiting and signing up-to Club Active if you are a frequent swimmer. Thanks Hanzy
Negative experience: Good facility let down by dissociated staff. My partner and I took our daughter here as a reward for good behaviour, we were all in a good mood which appeared to bother a staff member named Sarah. We asked for a general swim for the 3 of us and a spa and sauna for my partner and I. We were overcharged by sarah despite scanning a leisure card. Our daughter was freezing after 20 minutes in the pool so we gave her a towel and allowed her to sit outside with her feet in the spa as this area was much warmer. Despite our daughter listening well and sitting outside of the spa (and signage saying under 8s should be supervised inside the spa) we were confronted by 2 staff in a very rude and argumentative manor, Sarah was clearly having a bad day and had too much responsibility on her hands as she decided to project her issues and attitude on the 3 of us. We politlely communicated in response and did what we were asked which didn't stop the staff members from being argumentative and confrontational toward the 3 of us so we decided to leave. A staff member named April proceeded to tell us our daughter was dehydrated in a snarky manor. Our daughter knows to communicate with us when she's thirsty so that was out of line. In their defence there was a death in the changing rooms in the past couple weeks, likely due to staff incompetence so good on them for trying to care I guess. Our experience here was incredibly unpleasant, a rip off and really disappointing for our daughter.
Kia ora Katelyn, thank you for your feedback, we are very sorry to hear about your experience. Could you please email [email protected] with specific information, we would like to find out more about what has happened, and how we can remedy it. We do have an under 8 policy at all of our pools which means all children under 5 years old must be kept within arms reach of their adult supervisor, and children under 8 years old must be carefully watched by an adult. Children must be over 5 years old to use the spa, and children aged 5-8 years old can use the spa only if they are accompanied by an adult in line with our under 8 policy. You must be 16 years or over to use the sauna.
Negative experience: We arrived on a wet cold windy Saturday. We parked at the back car park since there are the most car parks around the back. The back entrance was closed we walked in the cold with our baby to hopefully enjoy a warm and welcoming pool. First up the changing rooms were filthy. Litter in every single one. We passed one with half a dozen wet nappies on the floor. Made us not want to remove our shoes. Then we got to the pool. Buy far the coldest pool we’ve ever endured. With a baby we expected to go into a warmer swimming area that was closed. The life guards said they would open it but then didn’t in other words it wasn’t closed for maintenance! So we stayed in the freezing cold pool with our 10 month old for approximately 15 minutes until we saw her start to shiver. Not a pleasant experience
Kia ora Graham, thank you for your feedback, we are sorry to hear about your experience. At times maintenance issues do come up, although unfortunate this is unavoidable and we need to prioritise the health and safety of our customers which sometimes means closing a pool at short notice. Our Toddlers’ pool sits between 30–32°C and our water-play area sits between 29–31°C which is standard across the country. Before visiting the facility, we would recommended checking out the timetable on our website and following us on Facebook for the latest updates to ensure the pools you wish to use are open. We will pass on your feedback to the team regarding the cleanliness of the facility, again we do apologise for this.
Positive experience: Came to do some laps and have a shower as we road tripped around. Accidentally came during a giant swim meet so very busy. Pool nice enough, place is laid out in a confusing way though. Women’s showers as far as I could tell had no doors at all, which I wasn’t comfortable with so asked the benevolent god working the front desk if I could use the family showers which are in their own private cubicles. These are fine a bit cold though and smelled like diapers lol.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely love going here. The team is great, life guards are nice. Spa is hot. And hydro pool is great. Only down fall is the spa costs extra. But 5 stars.
Negative experience: Rude incompetent staff. Our toddler was so cold in the kids pool that she was shaking and crying. Paid full price for spa and sauna despite using a leisure card. Staff (Sarah) spoke to us in a condescending manor despite my partner and I being receptive and returning her attitude with kindness. We were told that we couldn't both use the spa and sauna (after paying) as our daughter wasn't aloud In the room and we needed to supervise her elsewhere. I understand people have bad days but this confrontation could have been avoided with any kind of self control or a sign in the room stating kids weren't aloud in there, instead there was a sign saying under 8s should be supervised at all times which contradicts what we were told
Kia ora Matt, thank you for your feedback, we are very sorry to hear about your experience.
Positive experience: The cafe is a bit pricey, but the facilities themselves are great.
Negative experience: Idiotic users, but some of the staff are friendly! Would not recommend!
Fantastic experience: Good place to relax and keep fit at the same time. Good for families.
Positive experience: Great pool for young kids, just very frustrating they are often unable to staff it sufficiently on the weekend resulting in the toddler pool being closed.
Negative experience: They told me it was company policy not to accept the legal currency of NZ, ie cash. So I had to cancel the order.
Kia ora Christopher. Thank you for your feedback. All Mojo cafes have a cashless policy and as this is a temporary pop up at WRAC, we need to respect their policy. If you have cash on hand and no other payment option available, you can head to reception and purchase $10 and $20 vouchers that can be redeemed at Mojo. Thanks ^Jenni
Negative experience: You probably do not realize the amount of pee that's in the Childs pool. disgusting. there is about a 65% chance that every 6 year old that goes in that place urinates.
Negative experience: Great facility but lacking adequate parking. Large rear Carpark with good accessibility parking but rear entrance not staffed.
