Evolution Muay Thai

Welcome to Evolution Muay Thai, Tauranga’s premier destination for martial arts fitness and authentic self-defense training. Located in Papamoa, our gym is far more than just a place to work out; it is a supportive family where every member, from complete beginners to seasoned fighters, feels like they truly belong. Founded by Head Coach Tommy Gunn, a 5-time New Zealand Muay Thai Champion and former professional fighter, Evolution was born from a passion for coaching after Tommy’s competitive career took an unexpected turn. What started in a garage has grown into a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to forging champions and building confidence.

Our training philosophy revolves around the "eight limbs" of Muay Thai—hands, elbows, knees, and shins—offering a comprehensive workout that blends cardiovascular endurance, strength conditioning, and practical self-defense techniques. Whether your goal is to shed weight, improve mental resilience, or prepare for competition, our classes are tailored to meet you where you are. We pride ourselves on adapting our teaching style to suit individuals of all ages and abilities, ensuring a safe, fun, and effective learning environment.

At Evolution Muay Thai, we offer a diverse range of programs designed for every stage of your journey. Explore our specialized classes, including Kids Muay Thai for ages 5-10 to build discipline and focus, Youth Classes for teenagers to foster confidence, and inclusive Women’s Muay Thai sessions. For those looking to master the art, we provide structured pathways from Beginners to Fundamentals, Clinch work, and Advanced Striking for experienced athletes. Our expert team, including Assistant Coach Duoc and Kids Coach Paora, ensures that every session is delivered with high-level technical instruction and genuine care.

Join our community today and experience the Evolution difference. We offer a free trial class so you can feel the energy, meet the team, and see if we are the right fit for you. With flexible membership options starting from $34 per week and a welcoming atmosphere that keeps you coming back, Evolution Muay Thai is where your journey to becoming a champion starts. Fantastic experience: Been struggling with not smoking weed and vaping for years. Training at evolution is definitely the main reason I was able to quit my bad habits. The whole place has changed and even saved my life. I’ll always be grateful for this gym. The coaches are Fukn brilliant and all the other students make the place really welcoming and friendly. I never thought a place where people learn to fight would be so peaceful.
